Knox College invites applications for Director of Civic Engagement. As part of the Division of Student Development, the Director of Civic Engagement will lead the Kleine Center for Community Service by setting Center department vision and goals, coordinating assessment of achievement of student learning outcomes, and providing leadership oversight for initiatives and relationships that contribute to the achievement of departmental, divisional, and institutional priorities.


The Director supervises an administrative assistant and student employees, and is responsible for developing a high performing and cohesive staff, crafting and implementing student-centered community service and civic engagement programs, building and maintaining effective relationships and partnerships with campus and community leaders, and providing oversight and leadership for excellence in departmental operations, budget management, policy development, and overall administration of programs.


Essential Functions:

  • The day-to-day operational management and oversight for the Kleine Center includes, but is not limited to, the following: maintain sustainable systems, structures, and processes for volunteer service programs and services.
  • Creating advertisements for volunteer opportunities
  • Designing recruiting tools
  • Participation in email and in-person recruitment methods
  • Providing the Knox College Volunteer training
  • Advertising and tracking the Knox College required Illinois Department of Child and Family Services Mandated Reporter Certification
  • Placing volunteers with community partner organizations
  • Creating the transportation schedule
  • Hiring and training the Kleine Center van drivers
  • Creating all information sheets for each volunteer event, and maintaining all correspondence between the volunteers and the community partner.
  • Be a campus leader in sharing insights and best practices in this area, collaborating with academic affairs and the directors of related student support centers to implement new programs, support faculty and staff, and assist students in understanding the value of these opportunities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Create Year End reports and maintain budget reports
  • Track individual volunteer hours and end of term and end of academic year volunteer hours
  • Design and administer volunteer surveys for long term volunteers
  • Design and manage a Day of Service each term supported by the Mary Filosa Brown Memorial Fund
  • Recruit and direct volunteers for the Knox College Commencement Ceremony
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community partners including site visits, agency orientations, safety assurances/risk management
  • Create weekly tasks and jobs for work study staff, attend weekly meetings with staff, assess work products, submit approval for time cards
  • Complete a KCCS Report for each trimester and then combine to comprise an annual report
  • Create and maintain a KCCS Volunteer Menu and Sign up Genius system for each event throughout each trimester.
  • Manage and report on 3 budgets: Kleine Center, Mary Filosa Brown Memorial Fund, Jim Doyle Fund
  • Participate in leadership opportunities as a representative of Knox College in the Galesburg community

Required Qualifications:


  • A master’s degree in education or a related area
  • A proven track-record of management and leadership
  • Ability to articulate a vision of civic engagement
  • Demonstrated experience with developing and maintaining robust community partnerships
  • Ability to apply theory to practice; develop programs focused on deep and integrated learning, critical reflection, and related and assessable learning outcomes
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Flexibility and the ability to effectively communicate with students, families, faculty, staff, and community partners
  • Skills and experience with administrative writing, interpersonal communication, presenting, and relationship-building

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience implementing civic engagement initiatives on a college or university campus
  • Previous teaching experience
