What You Will Do

The Applied and Fundamental Physics Group (P-2) at LANL is searching for motivated and knowledgeable candidates for a Scientist 4 position to take on the role of Diagnostic Coordinator (DC) for a major experimental series that will be fielded at the NNSS site in Nevada. The DCs have full scientific responsibility and authority for the data returned by the experiments, and coordinates all diagnostic efforts involved in the experiments. Tasks include obtaining physics requirements from the design PI (principal investigator) and develops the diagnostic suite to meet those requirements. The DC works closely with the physics design and engineering leads, negotiates for budget, determines personnel, and is responsible for reporting to program leadership on status and deliverables.

P-2 executes a range of fundamental and applied research in a number of physics disciplines, including dark matter searches, plasma physics, and fluid dynamics-many with national security applications.

Physics division is a multi-disciplinary division at Los Alamos National Laboratory working to answer science questions about the nature of the universe and providing solutions for national security concerns.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Diagnostic hardware or experimental analysis experience.
  • Knowledge of/familiarity with the weapons program.
  • Acknowledgment and acceptance for frequent travel to NNSS facilities in Nevada.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with people from a variety of backgrounds, levels, and organizations to achieve effective technical collaboration.
  • Record of effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to safety, security, quality, and diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance which typically requires US Citizenship.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 12 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Current Q clearance.

  • Experience with or significant knowledge of the subcritical experiment program.

  • Familiarity with fielding and analysis of one or more of the following diagnostics: radiography, photon doppler velocimetry (PDV), broadband laser ranging (BLR), chirp bragg fiber, time of arrival diagnostic (TOAD), and optical pins

  • Previous experience in project management including supervision of the technical scope, schedule, and budget of the effort.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
