Job Summary
The Communications Specialist will support membership and revenue growth through communications strategies and tactics, including design, print publications, storytelling, writing, editing, email marketing, production, and online and social communications that effectively communicate and translate the Girl Scouts value proposition and enhance and uphold its brand reputation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Communications Specialist will support and execute the following strategies and tactics to meet organizational objectives, as well as specific marketing campaign objectives:
- Develop, design, and write compelling content for a variety of communications products across multiple platforms, including print, online, email, social, blog, event, and in-person communications tools.
- Serve as designer creating original, engaging digital and print designs in alignment with GSRV and GSUSA branding and communications strategies.
- Serve as writer, editor, and proofreader; participate in community engagement on social media platforms; support the development and maintenance of the council website.
- Conduct independent research using council resources, documents, websites, and one-on-one interviews with staff, members, and volunteers to gather information needed for content development.
- Work closely with the Member Engagement and Communications teams to support communications, content strategy, and prospect and member engagement strategies; when appropriate, assist with crisis or other communication efforts.
The Communications Specialist will also:
- Articulate GSRVs desired image and position to all constituencies, both internal and external, with a focus on volunteer and member engagement.
- Ensure that communications by GSRV staff and volunteers are consistent in branding, messaging, and visual representation and in alignment with standards established by GSUSA.
- Collaborate with internal partners to execute communications strategies and tactics.
- Generate data-driven reports and evaluation of communications and marketing tactics performance
- Contribute to the management of a content/editorial calendar
- Generate audience-specific and all-member email campaigns
- Organize and manage use of photo, video, and brand assets
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with partners across the council. Actively participate in All Staff meetings, staff in-service training, and other meetings.
- When representing the council to both internal and external audiences, articulate GSRVs desired image and position to all audiences
- Support the councils commitment to diversity of girls, volunteers, and staff and conduct all activities with a high degree of cultural competency.
- Contribute to building a cohesive, flexible, and productive staff environment that demonstrates the values and mission of Girl Scouts and delivers high-quality customer service.
- Subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement
- Become a registered member of GSUSA.
Education and Experience
Required: Bachelors degree. Desired majors include communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, English, graphic design, or related field; or relevant work experience.
Preferred: Two years of professional work experience preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
- Intermediate or advanced proficiencies in design, photo, and video editing and creation tools such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Premier, or similar design and production software.
- Exceptional writing, reporting, and storytelling skills.
- Experience with the strategic use of digital media, tools, applications, and platforms, including web, social, and mobile, to meet communications objectives.
- Demonstrated attention to detail. Strong editing and proofreading skills.
- Excellent technical skills with Microsoft Office
- Strong organizational skills and ability to complete multiple, concurrent projects while meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality results.
- Energetic self-starter able to make independent decisions in a fast-paced, changing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to create and sustain positive collaboration with colleagues.
- Passion for the Girl Scouts mission of developing the next generation of women leaders.
- Ability to represent GSRV effectively to key internal and external audiences, including: staff, board members, girl members, volunteers, donors, program partners, community supporters, and the Girl Scouts of the USA.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed, including some evenings and weekends.
- Ability to travel to multiple office locations and attend offsite meetings.

- Sufficient eye-to-hand coordination to successfully operate a computer keyboard.
- Ability to sit upright for extended periods of time.
- Sufficient visual acuity to make appropriate judgments about Girl Scout materials.
- Ability to travel to and/or attend offsite meetings.
- Physical ability to frequently stop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull, lift, and move objects up to 50 pounds at shoulder height, and occasionally lift in excess of 50 pounds.
- Demonstrated normal depth perception.
- See and read printed materials, with or without visual aids; distinguish colors; read and understand rules and policies, labels and instructions.
- Verbal communication including the ability to speak and hear at normal room levels.
