Job description
The Crew Leader – Building Maintenance performs semi-skilled, skilled, technical and administrative work in
maintaining the facilities and equipment of the department. The Crew Leader – Building Maintenance
supervises building maintenance employees assigned to custodial and building maintenance work including
Community Service Workers, Custodians, City Maintenance Workers, and Skilled City Maintenance Workers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following is a list of typical duties assigned to this classification. The duties included on this list
are examples and not intended to be all-inclusive or restrictive.

- Plans, carries out and evaluates janitorial and preventive maintenance schedules for all department
- Evaluates status of equipment and facilities, and schedules needed repairs or replacement.
- Assigns, supervises and evaluates the work of building maintenance custodians or other assigned staff;
- Assists in the planning and coordination of building or capital improvement projects.
- Conducts various analyses and inspections of heating, cooling, air handling, lighting, plumbing, and other
- Develops shop procedures and budget data for the maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment.
- Serves as purchasing agent for central operating and janitorial/building maintenance supplies.
- Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for equipment and facilities.
- Prepares and administers the facilities budget in conformance with adopted policies and procedures.
- Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of facilities and
equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent plus some specialized training in building technology,
- Three (3) years in the maintenance and construction field or closely related experience;
- Experience working as a supervisor or in a lead capacity in maintenance or construction field is highly
desirable.
Licenses, Certificate and/or Special Requirements
- Valid State Operator's with commercial driver's license (CDL) endorsement, or ability to obtain one by

TESTING & SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants completing selection testing with acceptable results will qualify to have their name placed on

VET ERANS’ PREFERENCE CREDIT
The City of Hawthorne provides Veterans’ Preference Credit to qualified candidates who are successful in
the examination process. To be eligible for this preference, a legible copy of DD214 upon application filing
with the Hawthorne Human Resources Department is required.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
