COURT/VICTIM ADVOCATE
Summary
The victim/court advocate acts as a service representative for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault providing direct services to these victims. The advocate’s direct service responsibilities include providing support, advocacy, court advocacy, information, transportation, referrals and crisis intervention.
Duties and Responsibilities
Direct Services:
- Work with victims and clients by phone, in face-to-face meetings, and in court.
- Provide crisis intervention services, such as emotional support and emergency services as needed.
- Provide client specific advocacy to meet the identified needs of the client/victim, such as contact with law enforcement and other agencies.
- Provide information about protective orders, family court, criminal court, immigration laws, and other legal procedures as needed.
- Assist clients in completing the Emergency Order of Protection paperwork and the filing process.
- Prepare and provide clients with educational materials about the Order of Protection process and discuss with them what to expect, how to dress for court, and the “do’s and don’ts” while in court.
- Assist clients in the understanding of protective order protocols, and what to do if there is a violation of the protective order.
- Assist clients in safety planning, identifying danger risk, identifying safe options, and problem solving.
- Prepare and provide educational materials to the victims of sexual assault and domestic violence as needed.
- Accompany clients to other court proceedings as required, such as DHS court hearings, child custody hearings, drug court hearings, family court hearings, and any other proceedings as needed.
- Transport clients if needed to court, emergency shelter, long term shelter, or other designated safe place.
- Facilitate Pre-hearing discussions with clients to further prepare them for the upcoming hearing.
- Coordinate with the DA’s Victim Witness Coordinator when necessary to provide information to clients regarding dispositions and future hearing dates.
- Prepare and provide clients with the information to effectively monitor when the perpetrator has been served the Order of Protection, arrested on criminal charges, or released from the correctional facility.
- Provide information and referrals about legal aid resources and other community resources available to the client.
- Network with other agencies to provide assistance for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
- Assist victims in completing and submitting applications requesting victims’ compensation.
- Assist victims in completing and submitting applications requesting address confidentiality from the perpetrator.
- Participate in the crisis line on-call rotation as scheduled.
- Inform clients/victims of their rights and maintain client confidentiality at all times.
- Keep Executive Director informed of high-risk situations pertaining to the clients and the services being provided.
Advocacy, Outreach, and Organization Representation:
- Provide community education as assigned.
- Provide professional training to groups such as law enforcement and other partner agencies as assigned.
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners.
- Actively participate in community meetings related to improving the community’s response to domestic violence and sexual assault.
- Prepare and provide community resource packets for medical staff, social services, religious institutions, and law enforcement as needed.
Record Keeping and Other Responsibilities
- Initiate and maintain all client records, such as recording and updating services each time you have contact with a client.
- Update service logs and all necessary paperwork in order to document the time spent and the services provided to each client, for billing purposes.
- Complete all service documentation in a thorough and timely manner, for billing purposes.
- Attend conferences, workshops, trainings, and continuing education activities as assigned.
- Maintain client confidentiality.
Qualifications:
- Be familiar with the dynamics of domestic violence, sexual assault, etc.
- Working knowledge of the legal system and the current state and federal laws.
- Ability to serves as a liaison between the victim and other agencies
- Ability to utilize multi-tasking skills and attend to detail.
- Ability to handle high stress crisis situations while utilizing sound judgement and problem solving skills.
- Ability to work sensitively with traumatized victims and to handle the crisis effectively.
- Ability to demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills with clients, co- workers, and community partners.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $17.50 per hour
