Washington State Parks employs more than 750 permanent staff and more than 350 seasonal and temporary staff throughout the state. The headquarters office is located in Tumwater, and region offices are located in Burlington, East Wenatchee and Tumwater.
This position typically works four (4) days/week, Tuesday - Friday 7 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Periodic travel throughout the state and overnight travel is required.

The Construction & Maintenance Project Specialist performs advanced skill level work in various trades, accomplishing routine, planned, and emergency maintenance in the park area. This position is responsible for project identification, planning, development, and completion of routine and non-routine projects (including emergency and urgent repairs), and overseeing maintenance and operation of agency owned equipment, tools, buildings, and facilities.
The Construction & Maintenance Project Specialist may serve as the maintenance and project contact for the East Columbia Gorge area and associated parks managed facilities and properties.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Performs journey level skills in construction, maintenance, operations, and repair work for preventative and deferred maintenance projects. Skills include:
- Carpentry, masonry, roofing, plumbing, and electrical trades.
- Heavy equipment operations, transportation, maintenance, and repair, as needed.
- Maintain, construct, and remodel buildings, floats, docks, gates, culverts, trails infrastructure and other facilities required for park operations.
- Perform construction and maintenance tasks and projects within the parks and facilities managed, which include:
- Permitting, budgeting, written documents, periodic project review, and quality control.
- Meet building and permit codes, accurately and timely.
- May serve as lead on projects including teaching, training, guiding, assisting, and communicating effectively with staff.
- May assist with projects at other state park areas.
- Maintain health and safety standards.
- Perform complex mathematical calculations.
- Purchasing materials required to complete projects adhering to purchasing regulations.
- Prepare cost estimates for construction, alteration, installation, repair, and maintenance projects.
- Perform duties alone and in remote locations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two (2) years as a Maintenance Mechanic 1.
- Four (4) years of advanced level experience in two (2) or more of the construction/building trades to include: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or equipment operation.
- High school graduation or GED.
- Valid unrestricted (except corrective lenses) driver's license.
- Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) from WA, OR, or ID (depending on your state of residence) or willingness to obtain within the first 12 months of employment.
- First Aid/CPR Certification or willingness to obtain within the first 12 months of employment.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working for Washington State Parks or a similar parks and recreation entity.
- Three (3) experience driving and operating a variety of vehicles and light to heavy equipment.
- Three (3) years knowledge and experience working with various hand tools and power tools.
- Two (2) years technical knowledge and expertise in construction, installation, and problem-solving issues impacting agency facilities, sites, and systems.
- Knowledge and application of building codes, rules and regulations governing safety, repair, maintenance and constructions of facilities, and tasks.
- One (1) year project management experience including planning, purchasing, and completion of tasks.
- Experience organizing work projects to include time management, multi-tasking, and communication.
- One (1) year of beginner skill in the use of Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Outlook, and Excel.
UNIFORM INFORMATION:
All Construction & Maintenance Supervisors are required to wear a uniform. A complete and properly worn uniform helps establish the professional identity of a Construction & Maintenance staff member and promotes respect as a Washington State Parks employee. All Construction & Maintenance Supervisors will receive 6 shirts within the first year (2 shirts per calendar year after the first year), 1 jacket every 3 years, 1 baseball cap every year, 1 safety vest every 3 years, and a clothing stipend of $200 per year, and a $250 boot stipend every 2 years. Uniform stipends are intended to offset the cost of clothing worn in the workplace such as pants, boots, raingear, etc.
