The Department of Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts (CINE) encourages applications for a Cinema A/V Specialist! The purpose of this position is to support the faculty with the academic mission of Cinema Studies. This mission includes the furthering of the understanding and appreciation for the art of cinema through classroom film screenings. The CINE A/V Specialist must be knowledgeable about 16mm, 35mm, and digital projection systems. It is the responsibility of this position that there is an adequate number of projectionists for the course lectures and screenings and that each projectionist is properly trained on the required equipment, which can range from 16mm, 35mm, digital projection systems, to DCP. They must also be comfortable with multi-media platforms that integrate with laptop and web-based programs. Faculty often have unique pedagogical needs with their media and this position will be responsible for supplying the necessary media. The CINE A/V Specialist is also responsible for cataloging and maintaining all media - analog and digital - in the Cinema Studies collection.
This role will also support the First Person Cinema programs once-monthly visiting artist screenings. The CINE A/V Specialist will be tasked with ensuring all media is acquired and prepared for presentation (typically 16mm and/or digital files), that there is a scheduled projectionist for the event on a Monday evening (can be the A/V Specialist or delegated), and that travel is secured for the visiting artist through the University's Concur system.
Who We Are
The Department of Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts (CINE) seeks to integrate the critical, historical and theoretical study of cinema, media and the visual arts, with artistic and commercial practices. Our Department offers the academic degrees BA, and BA/MA in critical film studies, and BA, BFA, and MFA degrees in film and video arts. All of our students in the critical and production tracks complete a number of critical studies requirements including cinema history, film analysis, film theory, genres, documentary practices, directors, national and regional cinemas, and other history and theory classes. These courses are all coordinated with filmmaking and critical studies majors sharing their different expertise to make for a more engaging, deeper understanding of the subject of our studies.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Media Management
The Cinema Studies department owns over 1,000 rare 16mm titles, with a growing collection of both 35mm and digital content as well. This position is responsible for the cataloging of this collection as well as its management.
- Use supplied faculty syllabi, pull requested titles from collection for class use.
- Order titles requested that are not already in CINE collection.
- Work with Norlin libraries to catalog existing media in collection as well as new acquisitions.
- Rip media as needed from physical discs to ensure uninterrupted playback of clips for lectures and full films for screenings.
- Work with distributors to secure 16mm or 35mm titles when available.
- Ensure that titles are available for remote access via University online learning tools (Kanopy, Canvas, Swank, etc.) when necessary or requested.
- Collaborate with the on-campus accessibility office to ensure proper special needs (i.e. captions) for films are met as needed.
First Person Cinema Support
The First Person Cinema Program runs an average of once a month, during academic semesters. The CINE A/V Specialist will work closely with the FPC director on these matters.
- Acquire media for screening, either directly from artist or other avenues as available.
- Prepare media for screening. For analog screenings, this means that the print is inspected and projector is tested to ensure safe playback. For digital screenings, this means ensuring media is present on booth computer and a playlist is created.
- Schedule a projectionist to run the screening for the artist. This can be done by the A/V Specialist themselves or it can be delegated to another trained projectionist.
- Secure travel for the visiting artists using available tools, primarily the Concur system, to book flights, hotels, and shuttles.
Projection
Projecting for some classes when needed, training staff and employees on projection equipment (analog and digital), scheduling projectionists for needed courses, and equipment repairs.
- Work from supplied course schedules and faculty syllabi, schedule necessary projectionists as needed for course lectures and screenings.
- Ensure proper and adequate training for all projectionists.
- Maintain projection booth equipment and spaces.
- This includes changing bulbs, upgrading and repairing projectors, preventative maintenance (especially on analog machines), regular cleanup of spaces, and regular audio and visual checks.
- On occasion, project for special events or as coverage for classes.
Other Opportunities
- Provide ongoing support to ensure media presentation is at the highest standards achievable for course needs. This includes emergency tech support for faculty members related to classroom projection and implies a soft on-call situation for times when a screening is taking place and the A/V Specialist is not in office.
What You Should Know
- Some flexibility inherent in job hours, as this position is expected to project for some classes and/or special events as needed. This means that some weeks will require work in the evenings and/or weekends.
- A general week will be a standard 9-5 type of schedule, to be worked out with supervisor. One Monday a month there will be a First Person Cinema show in the evening that will be required for support or projection.

What We Require
- At least 2 years of experience with projection equipment and in a field of study closely related to the work assignment of this position.
- Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
- This is a Classified Staff position. Applicants must be a Colorado Resident at the time of application.

- Ability to schedule and coordinate with personnel.
- Awareness of moving image industry standards relating to projection systems, practices and techniques.
- Determine proper adjustments to images on the fly using available tools and resources.
- Basic background movie knowledge in order to familiarize with media collection more easily.
- Self-motivated.
- Exhibit problem solving skills.
What We Would Like You to Have
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in moving image, film/television production or digital media.
- Experience with the following: digital projection systems, analog projection systems (35mm and 16mm).
- Proficiency in digital media software, such as NLEs, Adobe Suite, Blu-ray ripping/burning, etc.
- Proficiency in demonstrating and training projection systems and equipment.
