Reporting directly to the Chair of the Sociology Department. The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) will serve as the chief administrative and financial officer for the academic department comprised of 35 ladder faculty, 8 career staff, 120 graduate students, 50 Teaching Assistants each quarter (450 sections per academic year), over 1,800 undergraduate majors and an annual course enrollment of approximately 10,000 students in over 100 undergraduate and graduate course offerings that will require the hiring of up to 10 temporary faculty (lecturers). The combined operating, summer session revenue, academic fellowship, grants, endowment and gift budget is over $16 million. The CAO functions independently and in conjunction with the Chair and faculty of the Department on a broad range of duties. Primary responsibilities include strategic and long range planning; policy and direction setting; problem solving; decision making; budgetary, staffing and resource management; as well as general administrative management of the department. Serve as an administrative liaison to the Dean's Office to clarify Departmental goals and objectives.

Required/Preferred

Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree and 5-8 years of relevant experience; or equivalent experience.

Preferred

Working knowledge of fund accounting and administrative management of financial accounts, including contracts and grants, in a university environment.

Required

Strong managerial and professional knowledge of higher education and administrative management.

Required

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively and diplomatically with a variety of people at all organizational levels and from all backgrounds.

Demonstrated ability to meet programmatic goals through effective and positive supervision.

Demonstrated ability to apply logic and good judgment in decision-making.

Ability to generate innovative alternative solutions to complex and non-routine problems, determine short and long run implications, evaluate merits and roadblocks, and apply the best solution.

Working knowledge of University systems such as those maintained to support the financial and enrolled student systems.

Working knowledge of UC business policies and procedures as they relate to department administration.

Knowledge of policies for administering undergraduate and

graduate/professional degree programs.

Demonstrated skill in management of space, equipment, and material resources

including development of utilization plans and justifying acquisitions.

Demonstrated skills in management of multi-function staff covered by a variety

of personnel policies and union agreements, including defining staffing needs

and position requirements, hiring, training, and delegating work assignments,

fostering teamwork and good morale, evaluating performance, and tracking

corrective action.

Demonstrated knowledge of relational database software, spreadsheet, and

other business software.

Required

Working knowledge of microcomputer systems. Demonstrated ability to create

and maintain management information systems, using word-processing,

spreadsheet, and/or database software, including Microsoft Access, Word, etc.
