Job Description - Chemical/Environmental Engineer

We are currently seeking a talented individual for the position of Chemical/Environmental Engineer. The successful candidate will assist in the implementation of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulated waste programs under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), Asbestos National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP), and Department of Energy (DOE) Low Level Radioactive Wastes (LLRW). Prepares environmental permits for Asbestos NESHAP. Assesses proposed new waste legislation/regulatory actions as they affect Energy Delivery and Shared Services facilities. Evaluates methods of reducing compliance cost and/or increasing business unit profitability. Provides regulatory interpretation and regulatory impact analysis to Energy Delivery and Shared Services facilities as it relates to Waste management, handling, storage, and disposal.

Position-Related Responsibilities

  • Assists in drafting and reviewing submittals to EPA, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), Pima County Department of Environmental Quality (PDEQ), Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD), Pinal County Air Quality Control District (PCAQCD), and New Mexico Environment Department relating to Air and Waste Programs
  • Drafts and prepares submittal of Asbestos NESHAP environmental permits
  • Maintains contact and provides technical support to Energy Delivery facilities (TEP Transmission and Distribution, UNS Electric, Inc., UNS Gas, Inc.), and Shared Services facilities (Warehouse, Facilities, IS/IT, etc.) to assure compliance and provide proper interpretation of regulatory requirements and guidance
  • Inspects field operations, when necessary, to ensure that construction and operation procedures and practices are performed consistent with Company and regulatory environmental requirements
  • Implements the Company’s Environmental Compliance Program (Waste Programs) for Energy Delivery and Shared Services facilities
  • Evaluates environmental effects of waste management actions taken or proposed by Energy Delivery and Shared Services Business Units, and develops recommendations for appropriate actions and/or studies required to achieve business objectives consistent with environmental requirements
  • Anticipates and helps shape the framework of environmental requirements through the review of Local, State and Federal proposed legislative or agency actions and represents Energy Delivery and Shared Services in rulemaking proceedings in coordination with Corporate Environmental Services
  • Assists the various departments within Energy Delivery and Shared Services Business Units in the proper method of identifying, handling, storing, tracking, recordkeeping, transporting, and disposing of all types of regulated wastes (e.g., RCRA, TSCA, Asbestos, LLRW, etc.)
  • Assists in coordination and implementation of Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) training for Energy Delivery facilities
  • Collaborates with Corporate Environmental Services and the environmental professionals in the other Business Units of the Company
  • Interacts with governmental agencies regarding new rulemaking activities to assure proper future environmental planning and compliance in coordination with Corporate Environmental Services
  • Performs projects such as spill cleanup, evaluation, and reporting, preparation of TSCA PCB Annual Document Log and Annual Records, and other environmental activities, as needed
  • Assists Energy Delivery and Shared Services in complying with Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations related to transport of regulated wastes
  • This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.)

Chemical/Environmental Engineer I

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical or Environmental Engineering or related field with less than two (2) years professional experience in an engineering role
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in use of software applications

Chemical/Environmental Engineer II

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications of Engineer I and two (2) or more years of professional experience in Chemical or Environmental engineering role or related field with at least 2 years of related experience in the electric utility industry or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Asbestos Inspector 24-Hour Certification
  • DOT Hazardous Materials Transport 24-Hour Certification
  • HAZWOPER 40-Hour Certification
  • MSHA 24-Hour Certification
  • RCRA 40-Hour Certification

Chemical/Environmental Engineer III

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications of Engineer II and four (4) or more years of professional experience in Chemical or Environmental engineering role or related field with at least 4 years of related experience in the electric utility industry or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Required successful completion/passing of Fundamentals of Engineering, F.E. exam (Engineer-In-Training)
  • Proficient in all aspects of time management, project organization, and technical analysis

Chemical/Environmental Engineer IV

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications of Engineer III and six (6) or more years of professional experience in Chemical or Environmental engineering role or related field with at least 6 years of related experience in the electric utility industry or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Prefer Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Arizona
  • Demonstrates leadership skills and supports all decision making with superior technical knowledge and economic analysis
  • Makes decisions independently and requires minimal guidance or supervision on any technical activity
  • Only requires supervision on overall objectives, critical issues, and new concepts

Pay Rate: $65,000 - $105,000 + Dependent on experience and qualifications.
