Job Description
The Department of Nutrition Sciences (DNS), School of Health Professions (SHP) at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for a full-time 12-month tenure earning open rank faculty position. The position is tenure earning if the candidate has a research doctorate. This appointment includes an administrative responsibility as dietetic internship Program Director (DI PD). The DI PD is expected to manage all components of an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND)- accredited DI, teach, provide departmental and college service, and serve as a strong advocate for the program. Doctorate candidates are expected to conduct research. The DI PD role includes academic advising, administrative work related to ACEND and SACSCOC accreditation, recruiting students, and building productive interprofessional relationships with key partners to enhance the program and to maintain and extend program visibility. In partnership with the Dietitian Education Program Director, the DI PD will oversee the Dietetics Practice Coordinator who plans, implements, and coordinates dietetic intern and preceptor onboarding, and secures/maintains affiliation agreements.
This faculty member will possess teaching expertise that complements the strengths of existing faculty and is expected to teach in person and online undergraduate and graduate courses, provide academic and leadership support to existing and upcoming educational programs, and engage in research, service, and scholastic activities that support the mission of the Department and School of Health Professions. Tenure status and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
UAB has historically been involved in nutrition, and the DNS has robust programs in obesity, diabetes, precision health, and cancer, and sponsors two NIH research centers (Diabetes Research Center and Nutrition Obesity Research Center). SHP is one of the nation’s largest and most diverse schools of its type with more than 20 programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels. SHP is one of six medically focused schools in a thriving academic health center. UAB is among the highest tier of US research institutions, and SHP is currently ranked in the top three for NIH funding for similar schools.
Candidates must have a Master’s or research doctoral degree in Nutrition or a closely related field at the time of hiring. Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credential is required through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Prior experience with ACEND accreditation processes and directorship is highly desired. Doctoral applicants should show evidence of existing scholarly research with potential for external funding.
