SUMMARY: The AVID Tutor will work with small groups of middle and high school students during the AVID elective classes under the supervision of an AVID teacher. Tutors must attend training classes and will utilize the AVID learning strategies and tutorial method.
ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200+ tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Provides AVID tutorial services to students individually or in small groups as assigned by the classroom certificated teacher.
- Takes an active part in working with the AVID students.
- Assists AVID students in developing personal pride in the AVID College Readiness System.
- Becomes a master at each stage of the AVID tutorial process.
- Provides academic support for students in rigorous courses.
- Serves as a role model/mentor to AVID students.
- Assists classroom teacher to help monitor student binders.
- May attend staff meetings and building events.
- May attend related professional development activities and workshops.
- Maintains effective communication with classroom teacher and AVID program administrator.
- Maintains professional conduct when working with students, staff, and parents.
- Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Be at least eighteen years of age
Possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent (GED) and
Two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 quarter hours); or an Associate’s degree (or higher); or a passing score (461) on a state local Para assessment exam.
Proof of qualifications must be included in the application for consideration.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of traditional Native American cultures and values
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any field
Recent previous para-educator experience
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
Successful criminal background clearance
Successful and/or clear drug screening
Be fully vaccinated against COVID-19

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand for long periods of time. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Anything over the weight limits should be done as a two-person lift or with a mechanical lift.
