We have an opening for an assistant sports editor for our five-day, Tuesday through Saturday, daily. The position would carry the sports editor title for two sister weekly papers, The Dexter Statesman and The Prospect-News in Doniphan. Both papers are in neighboring counties.

Our newspapers cover 15 high schools and Three Rivers College, a junior college with a rich men’s and women’s basketball tradition.

We are looking for someone who will engage our readers with feature stories and columns, and game coverage that doesn’t rely on play-by-play. Our assistant sports editor will also take his or her own photographs, help with pagination, and help uncover hidden talent to use as stringers.

We are a morning newspaper, so the ability to work accurately and quickly within a short window on deadline is of the utmost importance.

Salary for this position is $36,000-$39,000 based on experience.

We claimed four first-place awards in the 2021 Better Newspaper Contest held by the Missouri Press Association for news, sports and COVID-19 coverage.

We hold an annual campaign each year to recognize Difference Makers in our community, prioritizing the positive change these volunteers have created. This project has also previously won awards in the Better Newspaper Contest held by the Missouri Press Association.

We continue to seek new opportunities for our staff to learn and grow. We were recently successful in securing a Potter Digital Ambassador partnership with the Missouri School of Journalism and a Google technology grant, both aimed at expanding our digital presence. We are also part of the Local Media Association's Lab for Journalism Funding.

Pay: $36,000.00 - $39,000.00 per year
