Job Responsibilities
Position is established to assist the Master Mechanic in the performance of his duties which are performed in connection with maintenance and repair of all vehicles and equipment of the Falmouth Fire Rescue Department. Serves in an Assistance Mechanic capacity in the Repair Shop. Performs selected mechanical maintenance and repair work on fire apparatus, motor vehicles and other related equipment. Must be familiar with operating trucks and the ability to perform and/or assist in normal mechanic"s duties. Receives instructions in each portion of the disassembly, repair and testing of parts and equipment, mechanical features, electrical and gas welding, body work and engine overhaul. Performs the less difficult and repetitive type work on own but is under close supervision in assisting in the more difficult work. Required to periodically inspect all fire apparatus and vehicles and make repairs and adjustments if required. Reports all cases of negligence in the care of apparatus to superior or the Fire Chief. Will train and instruct all new personnel in the proper operation of all fire apparatus and assist in the task of qualifying drivers as directed. In the course of repair work, operates the pieces of equipment and attachments in check performance as required. Will road test all equipment when so instructed and will assist superior to ensure that equipment will qualify for State Inspection sticker. Must be familiar with State Inspection law. May be required to report to the scene of an accident when fire apparatus is involved to determine the cause of the accident, determine condition of apparatus, decides if it is safe to move and by what method. Obtains all necessary information, prepares reports, and reports facts to superior by radio or as instructed. Receives training and instructions in departmental procedures to purchase parts, preparations of work orders, determining labor and material costs and recording same in appropriate books. Receives special instructions and guidance in order to assist in drawing up specifications for fire equipment. Must possess general knowledge of ICC laws and be familiar with requirements for lights, braking systems, etc. Will serve as cover or back-up man for superior during his absence and will respond to calls of the Fire Chief, Duty Officer or any other officer as needed. Supervisory Controls:
Workflows to incumbent in form of oral or written instruction of tasks to be accomplished from the Master Mechanic. Spot checks are made to determine progress, quality of work, and compliance with work objectives. Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Other Significant Facts: - Incumbent must be a high school or vocational school graduate. Required to have a
Massachusetts "Class B" license and have had training with the operation and repair of heavy trucks. In addition, must have had three (3) years" experience as a journeyman or truck mechanic in a recognized garage. Assigned duties include, but not limited to, assist in maintenance and repairs, i.e., overhaul motors, rebuild or replace transmissions, differential gears, ignition systems, wiring systems, front-end alignment motor tune-up, hydraulic systems, water pump, painting, and body work.
Applicant will have up to six (6) months of employment to successfully acquire a Hoisting License at the town"s expense.
Additional Licenses/Certifications such as Auto Service Excellence-Certified Master Mechanic would be an asset. Application Special Instructions
