Position Title: Aquarium Science Instructor Department/Unit: Aquarium Science Program

Classification: Full Time Faculty -100% (1218 hrs) Status (exempt or non-exempt): Exempt

Reports To: Director of Aquarium Science Academic year: 9 months- 174 days/7 hours a day

Salary: $49,124-$53,174 - 9 months ($40.33-$43.55 per hour based on qualifications)

  • This position is a 9 month position (September to June).
  • Full time Summer employment(July & August) will be available in 2023.

TYPICAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching and Student Success: Instruct students using approved course outcome guides and accurate syllabi. Prepare instructional materials as needed. Meet all assigned classes. Apply the college’s values for teaching and learning. Facilitate learning that applies to students’ academic and career goals. Meet the curricular needs of students at various learning levels. Encourage mutual responsibility for a supportive learning environment. Provide effective teaching strategies in an environment that encourages student and instructor interaction. Actively engage students in the learning process. Encourage creative and critical thinking. Evaluate and grade student progress and systematically assess the program using meaningful indicators to assure currency, improve teaching and learning strategies, and achieve stated student learning outcomes for all students, including underrepresented students and first-generation college students. Maintain accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and scholastic progress. Maintain communications with internship supervisors and teach weekly section of internship course as needed.

Professional Responsibilities: Work collaboratively with colleagues and community partners. Participate in institutional work (such as accreditation and shared governance) to advance the College mission. Attend and participate in meetings that are regional and state, college-wide, department, and program level. Mentor other faculty, including part-time faculty. Maintain office hours. Assist in the recruitment of students. Undertake activities that promote and support: student success (such as mentoring of students); College priorities and programs (such as High School outreach and Dual Credit); and Faculty development. Participate in outreach and recruitment activities. Interact with students, staff, and administration in a professional manner. Assure effective two-way communication at all levels of responsibility. Coordinate student internships placements. Coordinate student building and systems assignments (about 6 hours/week). Serve as a back-up to the Aquarium Science Director regarding program representation, facilities oversite and staff direction.

Compliance Comply with published College Policies and Procedures. Maintain a safe learning and working environment by following all laws, policies and procedures established by the College and through state and federal oversight (such as OSHA and Title IX). Maintain College safety standards in work areas; ensure that students are trained in good safety practices; and make reasonable efforts to ensure that students follow good safety practices.

Other duties as needed: Use of media aids, the library, and other resources, as applicable. Requires a flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include evenings and/or weekends. Ability to work an instructional schedule that may vary from term-to-term. Ability to travel to a variety of teaching sites throughout Lincoln County.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

In addition to coordinating internships, building, and systems assignments, this faculty will typically teach 2-3 courses each term, in the Aquarium Science program.

No supervision- but may direct the work of student workers.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Faculty positions are represented by the collective bargaining agreement between American Federation of Teachers and Oregon Coast Community College.

New full time faculty have probationary appointments. Probationary appointment faculty may be reappointed annually based upon satisfactory performance. Contingent on three (3) years of successful performance, faculty will earn continuous appointment status.

Assignment will include teaching at all OCCC locations and may involve field work conducted at various organizations within Lincoln County. Travel between College sites and other locations may be required as needed.

Periodic travel and overnight stays outside of Lincoln County may be required for meetings, professional development, and other purposes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: Biology, Marine Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Environmental Science, Ecology or a closely related field of study, AND
  • Faculty shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited institution, AND
  • A minimum of six years of work experience in aquatic animal husbandry in a professional, public aquarium or research setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Curatorial or management experience in a professional, public aquarium, or research setting.
  • Animal husbandry experience in diverse settings including public aquariums, aquaculture, and research facilities.
  • Level 1 or higher AALSO certifications in Life Support and Water Quality.
  • Experience in a formal education setting.
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes, and/or program review.
  • Experience with instructional technology and distance learning.
