SUMMARY
Air Pollution Information Analysts working in the Merit System gather, analyze, validate, adopt, and generate specialized and statistical reports and summaries related to air quality emissions inventories, plant sources, program activities, and source registers. Analysts design new computer programs for data summarization and storage. Employees in this job class coordinate high-level activities for the department with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy required. Information is analyzed, interpreted, and reported to various organizations. There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position. Minimal physical activities are required for this position. Work is performed under the direction of the Administrative Air Pollution Coordinator and is reviewed for accuracy and completeness.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Performs air monitoring tasks including: collecting air quality data, documentation of data, working with other air monitoring employees, assisting in the creation of air quality forecasts, etc. in order to monitor air quality throughout Jefferson County.
  • Collaborates with air monitoring employees by reviewing air quality models in order to predict future air quality following standard forecasting protocol.
  • Maintains the quarterly Continuous & Manual Precision & Accuracy Audits and data files of required pollutants.
  • Operates and maintains centrally located computerized data acquisition/retrieval systems for the purpose of reporting all information concerning air pollution monitoring throughout Jefferson County and monitors systems to ensure accuracy.
  • Operates a centrally located computerized data acquisition system for the purpose of reporting all information concerning air pollution monitoring throughout Jefferson County.
  • Analyzes and interprets air quality data in order to monitor air quality trends, generate reports, and ensure compliance with EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standards and accuracy of data.
  • Develops and interprets guidelines for implementing an EPA-approved Quality Assurance Program for air pollution monitored data.
  • Submits appropriate reports and documentation to EPA for certification for all pollutants, precision and accuracy data.

  • Driver’s license.
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 30 hours of coursework in a natural science or related field (e.g., biology, chemistry, environmental science).
  • Successful completion of one or more college level statistics courses.
  • Work experience using database software (e.g., Excel, Access).
  • Work experience preparing technical reports (e.g., compiling data and information, reporting technical details of a project).

Preferred Qualifications are examples of experience and education considered to be highly desirable by hiring agencies.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGES:
  • Knowledge of the principles, applications, and information sources of environmental science, ecology, biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, and meteorology as applicable to air quality control.
  • Knowledge of mathematical science (statistics) pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of mathematical data, including predicting and forecasting based on data.
  • Knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of air contaminants.
  • Knowledge of the Environmental Protection Agency laws dealing with air pollution.
  • Knowledge of the Alabama Department of Environmental Management laws dealing with air pollution.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted both indoors in office setting as well as occasional field visits to external sites. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as a computer, phone, copier, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time but may involve occasional walking or standing for extended periods. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
