Burbank Housing is looking for an Accounting Manager to oversee the accounting operations of properties to ensure financial data is accurately reported and in compliance with GAAP and various agencies’ requirements. Responsible for managing the company’s accounting information and accounting department, supervising all Burbank Housing Management Corporation Accounting staff, providing reports to property management and limited partners, handling short-term cash management, maintaining Accounting software, and supporting audits.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities: The following reflects Burbank Housing’s definition of essential functions for this job but does not restrict the tasks that may be assigned.
- Ensure overall continuity and effectiveness of Burbank Housing Management Corporation (BHMC) internal controls and supervise all BHMC accountants.
- Propose, draft & update procedures relating to BHMC accounting operations and make recommendations for future efficiencies.
- Lead month-end close of Properties/Corporate entities; review monthly financials for anomalies, investigate causes, & recommend journals.
- Organize/support audit process for yearly property audit; review annual audits and approve audit AJEs provided by the auditing firm.
- Conduct balance sheet account analysis to identify any anomalies and thus make necessary adjustments.
- Quarterback, with minimum supervision, complex accounting transactions that support financial statement preparation, audit and tax support, and government compliance.
- Support the property’s Annual Budget and works with the Controller to develop cost allocation methods.
- Assist property management staff in budget development and management.
- Monitors operating performance of properties; provide monthly troubled asset analysis for internal review.
- Understand, analyze, reverse engineer, and execute complex transactions across numerous variegated entities that include limited partnerships, general partners, and LLCs.
- Interact with auditors and compliance officials and complete related schedules/reports.
- Assign impromptu requests for assistance from other departments.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience:
- A four-year college degree in Accounting or the equivalent.
- A combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
- Very good understanding of the full accounting cycle.
- At least 3-5 years of work experience in accounting.
- Experience managing and interacting with a team.
- Experience working in property management or affordable housing is a plus.

Language Skills: Ability to read, interpret, and analyze accounting records. Ability to write business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups and individuals.
Reasoning Abilities: Ability to interpret and analyze accounting reports, i.e. general ledger, account detail, and trial balance. Ability to think conceptually with the accounting cycle, and understand the ultimate effect of accounting transactions. Ability to collect data establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make recommendations.
Other Skills and Abilities:
1. Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, a good driving record, and automobile insurance per requirements of the State of California.
2. Working knowledge of computer software and systems: MS Office Applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
3. Knowledge of YARDI accounting software is a big plus!
4. Advanced Excel skills are a big plus!
