Pattern Maker

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Include but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Perform required operations or otherwise modify or repair broken or worn wood, metal and plastic patterns, core boxes of moderate complexity.
• Work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications and/or verbal or written instructions to complete projects under limited supervision.
• Select materials, lay out, cut, form, fit and assemble parts as required.
• Use measuring instruments and machines incidental to operations.
• Utilizes wood and metal working skills to fabricate molds in wood for use in metal casting.
• Lays out pattern on wood stock, dividing pattern into sections according to shape of casting to facilitate removal of precast from mold. Cuts and shapes parts.
• Sets up molds according to shop drawings.
• Fits and fastens parts together to form pattern or section.
• Trims, sands, and shapes surfaces.
• Assembles sections and verifies dimensions of complete pattern.
• Seals mold using epoxies, lacquers or polyurethane coating applied by spray, brush or roller.
• Supports production schedule as needed to prep molds for production.
• Maintain the pattern shop in a clean and orderly manner.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Applicant must be consistent and stable in job performance, as well as a critical thinking, hard-working individual with a great attitude.
• Understanding of and ability to read shop orders required.
• Working knowledge and/or experience of hand tools.
• Understanding of drawings and applying them to build projects.
• Previous experience working with mold fabrication using wood a plus!
• Good general math geometry skills including the ability to convert fractions to decimals.
• Experience with precision layout tools…calipers, combination square, fractional graduated rulers and tape measure.
• Experience with woodworking machines and hand tools.
• Understanding of mold processes…Foundry, Ejection Molding or Vacuum Forming etc. would be helpful.
• Floor tools such as: band saws, plainer/joiner, drill press, table saw, disk sander and spindle sander.
• Other instruments such as: protractor, T-square, scribes, rulers, fillet applicators, and miscellaneous specialty tools.

Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands:

Include but are not limited to the following:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arm; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel crouch or crawl.
• Employee is required to wear hard hat, steel toed boots and safety glasses at all times when they are working on the floor.
• Must be physically able to stand for long periods of time.
• The noise level in the work environment can range from moderate to high.
• A large percentage of work time is spent in a warehouse where temperatures can range from cool to hot.
• The employee must regularly lift and or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and or move more than 100 pounds.
• This position is a Monday- Friday day shift with overtime as needed.
