WHAT YOU BRING

Minimum associate degree, Bachelor’s in a related field strongly preferred

Minimum of one (1) year of experience working on legislative policy advocacy

Valid driver’s license and/or access to alternative means of transportation

Position Summary

The Voting and Representation (VR) Advocate is responsible for providing local and statewide advocacy support for Advancing Justice-Southern California and will serve as organizations local engagement lead to AANHPI and partner community-based organizations (CBOs). Utilizing a strong understanding of multi-cultural community coalition building, and organizations policy priorities and goals, this position will identify opportunities for collaboration to elevate awareness of key Voting and Representation issues to enhance engagement and advocacy of AANHPI communities and partners.

50% Coordinate regional Voting and Representation policy initiatives

• Collaborate in informing and implementing comprehensive voting and representation access advocacy strategies aligned with organizational priorities and campaigns.

• Provide legislative and strategic guidance and tools to community partners, including policy overview, advocacy engagement and campaign participation.

• Serve as an ambassador of AJSOCALs mission, policy, and advocacy priorities; develop and maintain relationships across constituents and partners

35% Centralize and Coordinate all CBO Advocacy Partnerships

• Develop and maintain multi-racial connections and partnerships in alignment with organizations policy priorities, with a special focus on voting and representation access.

• Maintain regular communication with AJSOCAL program staff, keeping abreast of key activities in order to make meaningful connections with community partners when appropriate

15% Support Organization wide activities and tasks as needed.

• Minimum associate degree, Bachelors in a related field strongly preferred

• Minimum of one (1) year of experience working on legislative policy advocacy

• Valid drivers license and/or access to alternative means of transportation

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong familiarity with local, state, and federal budget and/or legislative advocacy

• Experience working with diverse coalitions and collaborations

• Demonstrated ability to build relationships with decision makers, community partners, and diverse stakeholders

• Subject matter experience on policy issues impacting AANHPI communities and AJSOCALs priority areas are a plus such as immigration, education, equity, and voting rights

• Bilingual / biliterate in at least one Asian language (Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Tagalog, Thai, or Vietnamese) strongly preferred

• Demonstrated sincere commitment to social justice and serving on behalf of low-income, immigrant communities, AANPHI or non-profit environments preferred

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, experience with individuals for whom English is a second language (ESL) is preferred

• Excellent time management and organizational skills

• Strong computer and database skills with familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite products preferred

• Ability to travel occasionally

• Ability to work independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision

• Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends
