Job description
The University of Delaware Carvel Research and Education Center serves as the experiment station and county extension office for southern Delaware in Sussex County. This facility provides the setting for applied research in many areas coupled with the dissemination of these results and additional information to Sussex County residents as well as to the state and region.
The Utility Worker position performs a variety of duties in order to maintain the overall cleanliness and appearance of facilities at the Elbert N. & Ann V. Carvel Delaware Research and Education Center.
This position is a 40 hour per week position.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains the overall cleanliness of the Center, utilizing heavy and/or complex cleaning equipment.
- Moves furniture and miscellaneous equipment as directed; i.e., setting up and taking down tables in preparation for meetings held in meeting room facilities.
- Sweeps or shovels snow from steps and walks at building entrances and connecting walks.
- Cleans, renovates and renews floor surface finishes.
- Replaces overhead lights requiring use of ladders.
- Reports maintenance deficiencies in assigned work area.
- Removes bulk trash from buildings.
- Washes windows requiring use of high ladders.
- Vacuums, mops, sweeps and scrubs floors and other surfaces.
- Locks and unlocks interior and exterior doors to classrooms, lecture rooms, offices, etc. and inspects and assists in the security of facility.
- Assists with general lawn maintenance and mowing.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of a high school diploma/GED and one year experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment necessary to facilitate the completion of job duties.
- Ability to operate and maintain heavy-duty custodial equipment.
- Ability to work from oral and written instructions.
- Ability to observe and correct problems independently.
- Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
- Experience in custodial and facility cleaning is desirable.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to work nights and weekends as needed.
- Must be in good physical condition.
- Ability to work above and below ground level, and ascend and descend high ladders.
- Ability to lift, with or without assistance, up to 50 pounds.
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in order to utilize University vehicles to move equipment to various locations at the Center.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $28,000.00 - $30,000.00 per year
