Trainers teach YAI employees a wide variety of topics to better help them support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Trainers must have excellent interpersonal skills to communicate clearly and effectively with YAI employees. Trainers need to have strong public speaking skills, with an aptitude for presenting to large groups. Trainers also should be comfortable recognizing strengths and areas for others and be able to give developmental feedback to help educate employees. The ideal candidate will have experience working with the I/DD population as well as experience presenting information to groups of people.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Learn and become a knowledgeable authority on the history of the I/DD field, the different types of I/DD diagnoses, the I/DD vocabulary, and the needs of the I/DD population.
- Conduct one on one and group training.
- Create and maintain a positive and supportive environment while training.
- Use person-first language both during training and in all aspects of work at YAI.
- Use multimedia to present to an audience, including slides, videos, and computer modules.
- Be able to refocus the audience on a training topic; be able to refocus yourself as needed.
- Be able to regulate emotions, both audience and your own, as needed.
- Teach: Preservice, SCIP 1 and 2, CPR/First Aid and more
Requirements:
- BA in Social Work, Education, or related field.
- 1 year (minimum) I/DD or related social service experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong commitment and passion for the organization’s mission.
- Unquestionable ethics and integrity and high emotional intelligence.
- Excellent interpersonal skills when interacting with individuals and groups; able to read verbal and non-verbal communication and cues.
- Excel at making abstract concepts concrete; able to use real life examples to expand and clarify a concept.
- Able to work on Saturdays, a minimum of twice a month.
- Strong public speaking abilities.
- Able to demonstrate and teach physical interventions.
- Willingness and ability to travel to the varied neighborhoods of New York City that YAI services.
Pay rate: $21.63 per hour
