Jacobs is currently interviewing candidates for a Systems Engineer. The position supports our NASA customer / ESSCA contract located within MSFC in Huntsville, AL.
Description of Duties:
The Systems Engineer supports SLS Program / NASA systems on the Jacobs ESSCA contract.
The key purpose of the position is to plan and perform systems engineering activities associated with the development, integration and verification/validation of SLS Emulators that will be delivered and integrated into facilities used to develop/test the NASA Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV), the Second Stage Rocket (Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) or Exploration Upper Stage (EUS)) and the Launch Control System. This position may also contribute to the plan and perform systems engineering activities associated with the development, integration and verification/validation of SLS Integration and Test Facilities (IATF) and Software Development Facilities (SDFs) that will be used to verify the integrated avionics system for the Space Launch System (SLS) at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
Responsibilities:
The Systems Engineer will provide systems engineering support to the NASA SLS Avionics and Ground Systems Test Branch (ES53) at MSFC in support of the Space Launch System (SLS) program. The engineer will apply systems engineering methods to define/evaluate SLS IATF, SDF and Emulator requirements, interfaces and plan/support IATF, SDF and emulator verification/validation activities.
Additional responsibilities are defined below:
- Perform or coordinate systems engineering activities including Trade Studies and Analysis, Requirements Definition and Traceability, Requirements Allocation and Verification, Interface Definition, System Integration and test, and Design Verification and Validation.
- Work closely with personnel involved in the development and operation of the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) labs, the Second Stage Rocket (Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) labs or Exploration Upper Stage (EUS) labs) and the Launch Control System labs.
- Work closely with SLS IATF software, hardware, and facility development personnel during development and operation of SLS emulators and IATF facilities as needed.
- Implement project verification and validation strategies by defining and delivering verification and validation project deliverables.
- Work with hardware and software development teams to create, review, and approve verification and validation deliverables.
- Review requirements for products to ensure that requirements and specifications can be verified and validated, including risk mitigations, usability and NASA requirements.
- Work with hardware and software development teams to understand the product configurations being developed.
- Identify the data that will be required to show objectively that all configurations of the product meet their requirements, as well as the customer needs.
- Ensure that all test systems and equipment are appropriately validated and controlled.
- Review and analyze SLS Emulator / IATF system test data and record pass/fail results and conclusions. Ensure that design verification objections and success criteria, along with results are traced to requirements.
- Measure and report on progress toward completion of milestones and schedule.
- Support completion of development integration and testing, to characterize designs and understand trade-offs.
- Project deliverables may include producing and/or reviewing beta testing, SLS emulator configuration, test cases, installation and delivery plans, protocols, and reports; execution of the plans and protocols; and resolving deviations.
- Manage timeline for SLS emulator design, build, test, software installs, test case generation, delivery, verification and validation activities and generate status reports.
These activities will continue as the launch vehicle architecture matures and the SLS program completes program phases, reviews and schedule milestones.

Essential Functions
Work Environment
Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).
Physical Requirements
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
