About the Comer Education Campus

The Comer Education Campus (CEC) has been recognized as one of the most unique youth-serving organizations in the nation. Our mission is to help young people prepare to be well rounded global citizens who are ready for college and careers. We primarily serve youth in middle and high schools, while providing employment opportunities and counseling supports to our alumni.

Located in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on Chicagos South Side, the campus is anchored by the state-of-the-art Gary Comer Youth Center, Gary Comer College Prep High School and Gary Comer Middle School. Programming is offered in three primary categories: academics, enrichment, and college and career preparation. Together we serve nearly 2,000 young people annually.

Position Summary

GCYC is looking for a dynamic, energetic youth development professional to serve in the essential role of SYEP (Summer Youth Employment Program) Coach. The SYEP Coach serves a mentor, administrator and liaison for the delivery of our GCYC SYEP Program, including management of work acquisition, retention and work experience for youth workers.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Data entry and collection of youth workers employment time, work hours, and attendance data.

  • Assist in the management of My Chi My City credential management platforms and other online or software utilized by GCYC to manage youths career-related information.

  • Assist with the facilitation, direction and supervision of programmatic activities with youth workers

  • Act as the liaison to participants, worksites, supervisors and GCYC

  • Build strong, positive relationships with youth participants

  • Monitor youth workers placement at a work site or specialized training program for six weeks to ensure completion

  • Maintain communication and a working relationship with the work sites

  • Maintain communication with and act as a liaison to the assigned youth, worksites and GCYC staff

  • Develop and implement creative strategies to retain youth participants throughout the program

  • Assist with data collection and entry into Cityspan and other DFSS-designated platforms

  • Implement performance measurement tools with youth participants and ensure completion

  • Attend mandatory trainings and meetings per request of DFSS; including but not limited to trainings for Cityspan and a DFSS-designated technology platform

  • Plan, facilitate and/or co-facilitate specialized workforce trainings to the youth participants for six weeks

  • Attends required GCYC staff meetings and trainings.

  • Assists in the execution of hiring, outreach, recruitment and retention strategies.

  • Responsible for accurate data collection and data entry for grant and program compliance.

  • Works collaboratively in a team setting serving the needs of youth.

  • Serves as a role model for youth and community.

  • Abides by the employee handbook and established GCYC policies and procedures.

  • Supports the mission of GCYC.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Either undergraduate degree or experience coaching and mentoring youth and young adults

  • Professional looking to break into career services field

  • Able to commit to approximately 20 hours per week.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organization skills with ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks, be organized and meet deadlines.

  • Passion for coaching others and possesses the ability to lead/teach and mentor/coach youth.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Demonstrated experience developing, documenting and sustaining key HR processes

  • Excellent coaching skills to assist executives and managers.

  • Must have basic computer literacy skills including Microsoft Office, independent use of the internet and ability to learn and properly utilize software systems.

Physical Work Requirements & Environment:

The GCYC environment is consistently bustling with youth and community members. The Centers work is fast paced and varied. Our work is done on site where our youth and families are. Therefore, it is required that team members meet the following requirements:

  • Have the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

  • Able to complete administrative work in a shared office space within a youth center.
