About the Opportunity
This is an open position with Potomac Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.
This position supervises employees engaged in complex planning, scheduling, construction, maintenance, repair, testing and technical support of substation relay protection facilities and associated equipment including ensuring the compliance guidelines are followed. Area of responsibility also includes installation and maintenance of SCADA, power line relay communications, fiber communications and digital fault recorders.
Responsibilities include:
- Demonstrating and directing a solid commitment to all aspects of safety
- Directing and supervising employees engaged in complex construction, maintenance, repair, testing, and troubleshooting of protective schemes and systems associated with the electric transmission & distribution systems.
- Monitoring the activities of employees and ensuring conformance to established work practices and methods (Preferred Practices, Accident Prevention Handbook and Construction / Engineering Standards) while maintaining a high standard for adherence to safety.
- Supervising resources during Restoration of Service (RS) events to support public safety and system reliability that could potentially include Supervising the Service Restoration Dispatching function or other RS duties as assigned.
- Requesting and coordinating the availability of necessary equipment tools, materials and supplies required.
- Coordinating work with other departments and assisting with development of work plan; ensuring requirements of construction schedule are achieved.
- Carrying out work plan through adherence to work scope, priority, resource optimization and sharing; ensuring timely and cost-efficient completion of work which includes assurance that close out information is forwarded to the appropriate entities.
- Counseling employees, recommending corrective actions required to meet performance standards and acknowledging good work and work habits.
- Administering Company and Regional Absenteeism Management Program and Regional Safety Plan.
- Implementing instruction and training of controls employees in the established work practices and methods utilized throughout the department to increase knowledge and efficiency
- Confirming direct reports are continuously improving through the performance of job site safety visits, review of field observations, and monitoring adherence to established work coordination and information transfer processes.
- Scheduling, reviewing and completing all BES related relay maintenance and testing. Verifying completion of documentation for NERC and Regulatory agency maintenance / testing.
- Leading investigations and assisting engineering and other groups with system relay / equipment misoperations investigations.
- Executing the performance management process by providing feedback and coaching on an ongoing basis throughout the year by discussing development opportunities, performance issues, and changes that are occurring.
- Overseeing and offering technical support for the installation and maintenance of substation network communications between SCADA, protection relays, power line communication devices, DFR’s and other IED’s where applicable.
- Availability to receive calls after normal working hours from various groups (Transmission Operations, Distribution Operations, Substation Employees, Lines Employees, Project Managers, Upper Management, etc.) for ongoing construction, maintenance, repair, or troubleshooting issues as they arise.
- Continually seeking opportunities to increase customer satisfaction and broaden/deepen relationships; anticipating customers' needs and propose alternative solutions when necessary.
- Providing coaching and development to direct reports through the FE Performance Management process.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology with 3-4 years of relevant experience or Associate degree in an electrical field with 4-6 years of relevant experience or High school diploma or equivalent plus 8 years relevant experience in an electrical field is required.
- Relevant work experience is knowledge of construction and maintenance practices, procedures, work methods, materials, equipment, and tools which would be used to determine the resources necessary to perform construction and maintenance work activities.
- Prefer an advanced level of knowledge and experience in protective relaying, SCADA, power line carrier, and fault disturbance equipment installation, maintenance and testing.
- An advanced level of knowledge and experience in operations, repair and construction of assigned Transmission and Distribution area.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills; excellent written and oral communications skills
- Ability to learn various computer applications commensurate to the substation controls operation (CREWS, GIS, Syclo, SAP, FLEX, PowerBase, CASCADE, RTS, AcSELerator, etc.), and multiple relay communication interfaces in addition to Microsoft Office applications.
- Highly driven, self-motivated, and enthusiastic leader capable of communicating, motivating, and driving workforces toward positive change and improvement.
- Must be self-motivated and able to multi-task with competing priorities, provide both internal and external quality customer service.
- Knowledge of industry preferred practices and methods and the construction standards relating to electric transmission and distribution systems.
- Knowledge of applied electricity to include AC and DC electrical circuits and equipment.
- Ability to identify relay and equipment outage requirements applicable to maintenance and construction activities.
- Thorough knowledge of industry General Safety Specifications, Accident Prevention Handbooks, and the clearance and switching control procedures.
