JOB TITLE: Supv Distribution System Operations

DEPARTMENT: Dispatching – Wichita Systems Center
LOCATION: Wichita, KS
PAY RANGE: $95,900 - $127,800 (Min-Mid)

Scheduled Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. After-hours availability required to support storm events, On-Call/Duty responsibilities and as needed to meet customer reliability needs. In office attendance, no hybrid schedule.

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
To support and manage the daily operations of the distribution system. To ensure customer satisfaction through the safe, efficient and reliable operation of the distribution system which includes but is not limited to service restoration, Coordinating storm response, development and execution of switching orders, and monitoring the status of the distribution equipment.

Expectation to support, communicate, and lead with all distribution interactions. Supervisor will be working with other Distribution System Operators to identify inefficiencies, collaborate, and continue to improve Evergy's reliability. Applicant should have basic computer skills, and an understanding of Microsoft Office products. Multitasking and adaptability are a must. Understanding of the distribution electrical system is recommended.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The candidate is the administrator for the following functions through subordinates:

  • Ensures proper and timely responses to internal and external customer concerns, problems and inquiries.
  • Owns and serves the SOA for the distribution system.
  • Ensures safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the distribution system.
  • Assesses critical situations to determine risks and makes decisions involving safety and reliability

The candidate is directly responsible and accountable for the following functions:

  • Answers first step grievances and enforces the Bargaining Unit Contract.
  • Ensuring with operators, that effective coordination is maintained between Operations and other departments through proper communication and follow-up.
  • Provides leadership and solutions to support operators in performing the above functions.
  • Monitors and evaluates communications, switching and outage reporting input by Operators in NMS
  • Follows weekly guidelines and roles assigned to supervisor team
  • Supports and implements the use of new technology to improve customer service, increase operating efficiency and control costs.
  • Supports and operates distribution system automation.
  • Trains employees to develop and enhance skills necessary to efficiently operate the distribution system in NMS and OSI
  • Makes initial evaluation of system-wide damage due to weather or other conditions to recommend resources necessary for timely service restoration.
  • Improving operator tools and processes as required.
  • Utilizing planner tasks to correct outage data.
  • Reviews outage events to ensure accuracy for reliability reporting.


Education and Experience Requirements:
This position requires a high school diploma, or equivalent; an Associate or Bachelors degree is preferred. Requires at least five years’ experience in field operations, substation services, system operations or related utility experience. Supervisory experience is preferred.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:

  • Coordinating, staffing, training, and leading the Distribution System Operators
  • Enforcing the needs of system reliability through careful review and approval of requests for clearances or system reconfigurations based on knowledge of system limitations or expectations of load and weather conditions.
  • Enforcing with operators safe, reliable and rapid restoration of electric service to Evergy customers by effectively managing resources supporting the operations of the distribution system.
  • Enforcing with operators the safety and welfare of all Evergy personnel and general public through training and administration of the proper use of the clearance procedure.
  • Promote and maintain good customer relations through proper and timely responses to internal and external customer needs and concerns.
  • Contribute to the reduction of distribution system costs by adopting business practices that result in lower costs, without negatively impacting customer service or the integrity of the distribution system.
  • Ensure effective administration of the collective bargaining agreements and company safety rules through participating in refresher and new training courses to keep up-to-date with current policies and procedures.
  • Lead and communicate with peers and operators
  • Support and administer the implementation of strategic business initiatives through active participation of committees and teams responsible for development, implementation, monitoring and reporting of strategic business plan initiatives.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:
Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Working Conditions:
Must be able to perform the physical activities of the job and have a satisfactory work record including good attendance. May require work outside of normal work hours.
