Summer Camp Instructor: Art or Woodworking
Job description
The Camp
Camp Hudson is a boutique summer day camp just 40 minutes by train from Grand Central. Camp Hudson’s mission is to instill a love of learning, to inspire creativity and wonder, and to teach children the process to design and build their big ideas. Teachers and campers ages 5-11 collaborate on spectacular projects which help us explore what it means to make things and how that kind of creativity is relevant and applicable to everything in our lives. We transform ideas into artifacts and personal achievement into community success. We also have a lot of fun.
Run by Hudson Lab School, Camp Hudson has approximately 60 campers each week ranging from grades K-5. Camp sessions typically run over 1- and 2-week periods and have unique themes (like Superhero Academy, Welcome to the Jungle and the Hogwarts Invitational). We construct a large-scale project outdoors revolving around the theme. Individually children are free to create smaller projects on their own. We teach safe, appropriate tool usage, along with gardening, art, computational thinking and creative play. To learn more about Camp Hudson, please visit hudsonlabschool.com/summer.
The Job
We are seeking an additional 'specials' instructor with a background in creative pursuits. We are open to the specific area of expertise, as long as you get excited exploring it, hands-on with kids. Do you love to make things? Explore the great outdoors? Have a passion for theatre? Great! If this sounds like you, and you love working with kids and fostering their creativity, come join Camp Hudson for a summer of making and adventure!
Requirements
- Punctual, Reliable and Flexible. Every plan is a starting place and subject to change.
- Propose project ideas, prepare teaching materials and content, and then lead students through high quality projects
- Inspire campers to innovate, think critically, express themselves, find joy in the process of making, and support campers in their project goals
- Ensure that all spaces and classes are safe, welcoming, and inclusive to all participants
- Communicate clearly, empathetically, and respectfully with all students
- Lead classes of campers aged 5-11 through child-led teaching techniques that demonstrate clarity, generosity, and creativity, encouraging campers to grow and honoring student agency
- Excellent interpersonal skills; able to engage with children, their parents, and your team members in a welcoming, friendly, and professional manner
- Flexible, patient and calm under pressure; able to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
- Ability to follow safety guidelines and implement these guidelines
- Initiative! We are people who jump in when they see things that need to get done: when we have ideas, we try them (instead of just talking about them)
- Additional experience with project-based curriculum design, working with gifted children, knowledge of inclusive special education theory and practice, fine arts, applied arts or any other personal superpowers are welcomed!
- Successful camp educators have come to Camp Hudson from all types of backgrounds: from teachers and designers, to artists, education specialists, and even college students: if you like kids and like to build, we encourage you to apply.
While we welcome out-of-town applicants, as a non-profit camp we are unable to reimburse the cost of any travel associated with the hiring process or summer housing.
Dates and Work Hours
The camp environment is demanding, requiring intense dedication and work ethic from each staff member. Depending on the time of summer or the specific week or day, the needs of camp and resulting staff hours may vary.
- Paid training, setup and cleanup days will be held on Thursday, June 22 and Friday, June 23, and on Saturday, August 12, 2022.
- Camp runs from June 26 – Aug 11. Work is from Monday – Friday, starts at 8:45 am and finishes at 4 pm. We will be closed for the July 4 holiday. If you are only available for a subset of the summer, we encourage you to still apply.
- There will be 4 paid curriculum development sessions spaced at mutually agreed upon times in the month leading up to camp; the expectation is about two hours per session.
- Staff meetings will be held during regular work hours to keep us on the same page and create space for stories and new ideas.
