Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Director of Studio Museum Institute, this role will assist in the implementation of SMI programs. This includes coordinating the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of SMI interns, fellows, MPS & MEP participants.
  • Coordinate fellowship and internship orientation meetings, facilitate regular one-on-one check-in meetings with participants, and organize culminating celebrations for internship and fellowship programs.
  • Collaborate with the SMI Director to organize and facilitate the schedule of internship and fellowship professional development meetings and offsite excursions, designed to provide insight into the workings of museums and other arts and cultural organizations.
  • Facilitate the application and selection process of all SMI programs, coordinating with People Operations, Communications, and IT departments to ensure timely on- and off-boarding procedures.
  • Coordinate and compile comprehensive evaluations across all SMI programs at the end of each cycle and work with SMI Director to co-author the year-end reports.
  • Work with Communications Department to promote increased visibility for Studio Museum Institute programs, providing research and written content and images for various marketing efforts including e-newsletters, social media posts, and other forms of digital communication, as well as printed materials.
  • Collaborate with SMI Director to develop and implement professional development sessions, check-in meetings, and mentoring opportunities for SMI participating staff, including intern and fellow supervisors.
  • Perform administrative duties for SMI, including ordering supplies, tracking participation, coordinating program documentation, facilitating program evaluations, and organizing year-end reports.
  • Provide administrative support to the SMI Director for new initiatives, including the Arts Leadership Praxis.
  • Devise renewed strategies for tracking professional activities of SMI program alumni, supporting the quantitative and qualitative tracking of SMI alumni activities.
  • Support SMI Director in the research and writing of curriculum and programs relevant to contemporary art and Black cultural production.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Interest and deep commitment to contemporary arts, artists of African descent, or Black cultural scholarship preferred.
  • Strong desire to mentor college students and young professionals, and collaborate with museum staff across all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and with colleagues across museum departments and arts professionals in the field.
  • Experience with developing multi-layered, robust program curricula
  • Excellent organizational, communication, writing, research, and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with New York arts and culture communities preferred.
  • Self-starter with the ability to multi-task, handle concurrent schedules or workshops, sessions, meetings, and key deadlines.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with and accuracy in using Microsoft 365 Office products, including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Google Classroom and other related software applications.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in art history, education, cultural studies, visual arts, arts administration, museum studies, Black studies, or related field OR relevant work experience to highlight interest and skill in these areas.
  • Must have experience or interest in working in a museum environment.
  • Ideally at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in museum or arts and cultural programming, with responsibilities in planning, development, and implementation of educational programs

  • The team member must be able to lift a minimum of 10 lbs.

Work Environment

  • This position is a non-exempt position and may require working in excess of forty (40) hours during a work week.
  • Position work schedule may include evening and weekend hours to lead and participate in Museum programs, and meeting job goals and deadlines.
  • Fast-paced environment with varying levels of guests and employees present.
  • Building Accessibility – office locations are wheelchair accessible, with elevators in the building. Other accessibility accommodations can be further discussed.
  • Office desks include acrylic partitions, and the Museum adheres to COVID-19 safety guidelines as mandated by New York City and State

Salary:

$55,000 - $75,000

Salary is commensurate with experience within the guidelines of a small not-for-profit.
