POSITION: Speech Language Pathologist 1.0 FTE
Positions are projected to be the following;
Elementary SLP (3 positions)
Secondaryl SLP (3 positions - 2 full time, 1 four days)
NATURE OF WORK:
School-based speech-language pathologists provide assessment and remediation services for students who exhibit difficulties in the areas of language, speech, voice, and fluency. These services are designed to help children meet their educational goals.
- Attends meetings, such as SLP team meetings, faculty meetings, special education meetings, and parent-teacher conferences
- Collaborates with classroom teachers to schedule interventions using a variety of service delivery models such as classroom intervention, consultation/collaboration, and pull-out as appropriate to meet student needs in the least restrictive environment
- Maintains records of the speech-language program and prepares periodic reports as required
- Keeps updated data for program planning and decision making for students
- Submits timely reports which meet district and state requirements
- Safeguards confidentiality of student records and information
- Willing to complete records for third party reimbursement accurately and in a timely manner as appropriate
- Adheres to established rules, regulations, laws and appropriate ethical standards
- Demonstrates knowledge of federal, state and local rules, regulations and laws
- Attends evaluation and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as appropriate
- Conducts speech and language screenings
- Uses appropriate screening instruments
- Selects appropriate assessments based on individual student needs
- Administers tests according to acceptable procedures
- Obtains additional diagnostic information from appropriate persons and available records for speech-language purposes
- Obtains pertinent case history
- Obtains data from other professionals and parents
- Analyzes and interprets information to make recommendations regarding the need for speech-language services
- Integrates data from a variety of assessment techniques and sources
- Determines the impact of the student’s disability in regard to their ability to make progress in the general education curriculum
- Presents and explains data to evaluation and IEP teams
- Prepares evaluation summaries
- Presents information to school personnel about language disorders as they relate to literacy and interactive communication skills
- Presents information to school personnel about speech disorders (articulation, voice, fluency) and their impact on communication and learning
- Provides information to parents and teachers about speech and language development
- Provides information to school personnel, parents and non-school agencies about current procedures and program guidelines
- Provides input regarding the effectiveness of personnel assigned to the speech-language pathologist
- Collaborates/consults with classroom teachers
- Plans evidence-based interventions appropriate for individual students and groups of students
- Implements the service delivery model most appropriate to the students’ degree of severity
- Provides activities commensurate with students’ interests and aptitudes
- Modifies therapeutic instructional approaches and other functions from data gathered during therapy
- Selects/implements evidence-based practices which support the goals and objectives of the speech and language program
- Uses a variety of equipment, materials, devices, and aids
- Uses systematic and evidence-based intervention strategies to foster communicative competence
- Provides feedback and reinforcement to students
- Uses and maintains facilities, materials, and equipment (e.g. FM systems) in an optimal manner
- Arranges therapy environment to create optimum learning conditions
- Chooses therapy materials to meet the needs, age, cultural differences and interests of individual students
- Uses systematic procedures for review of student progress
- Changes activities on basis of student progress
- Promotes effective interpersonal relations with students
- Uses language appropriate to the listener.
- Maintains confidentiality of information received
- Promotes respect for cultural differences
- Encourages others to understand and respect those with disabilities
- Completes procedural documentation appropriately
- Develops appropriate IEPs based on students’ strengths & needs
- Manages time efficiently
- Provides and follows schedules for assigned schools and informs appropriate personnel of departures from schedule
- Keeps updated therapy data and lists dates and times the student received therapy
- Arranges travel time efficiently
- Engages in continuing education and professional growth activities related to speech-language education
- Reviews speech and language literature and makes use of new information during therapy and instructional procedures
- Applies knowledge gained from continuing education activities
- Explores and disseminates information about new and/or improved methods for serving students
- Provides consultation to parents, teachers, and other appropriate school personnel
- Seeks the assistance of teachers, parents and others to meet the communication needs of students
- Gives written information to teachers, parents and others on ways to foster speech-language growth
- Talks with teachers formally and informally about individual student’s needs and progress
- Coordinates students’ therapeutic service with those provided by non-school agencies by telephone, written communication, and/or formal meetings

- Create a safe a positive learning environment for all students
- Use a variety of instructional strategies to engage students, such as: station rotation, small group instructions, and the integration of technology.
- Facilitate student ownership of learning by using Universal Design for Learning strategies which include providing students choice with multiple ways to access content, multiple ways for students to monitor their progress and multiple ways for students to demonstrate their learning.
Qualifications
Masters degree in speech pathology or audiology. Verification of a passing score on the Praxis II speech-language pathology examination. Valid Washington State ESA certificate. Successful previous evaluations and supportive references are required.

Working Relationships
Work in partnership with both large and small groups of teachers and other professional staff. Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and teaching staff. Team up with grade-level colleagues to plan lessons, analyze student data, and maintain a focus on continuous improvement. Cooperate with the building administrator in the observation and evaluation process. When working with instructional paraprofessionals, provide appropriate lesson plans and activity supervision. May deal with a wide range of student abilities and behaviors; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.
Working Conditions
The daily work is performed in a classroom setting. The job incumbent is often required to stand or sit for prolonged periods, be exposed to a computer display terminal for prolonged periods, and meet externally imposed and inflexible deadlines. May be required to work outdoors in inclement weather; lift, move, and position students and equipment; supervise students, bus loading/unloading; attend to students’ personal hygiene; may be required to deal with distraught, angry, or hostile individuals; may need to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids and cleaning or disinfecting compounds; required to work in non-routine positions for extended periods.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assist in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job related is performed under a generally hazard-free environment and in a clean atmosphere
