I originally launched KAN to identify volunteer, recreation, and work opportunities for my daughter, Margot. I realized that others like Margot might benefit, and that a community of families like ours might help to assemble the support needed to meet the full range of our children’s needs.

As KAN's Community Services Coordinator, you work 1-3 days/week directly with Margot to help extend her existing skills to new sites as she transitions out of school, and build new sites and skills. You spend 1-2 days/week helping to train and supervise 1-2 part-time Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) working with Margot. You spend at least 1 day/week helping to support new programs in development for Margot and others in partnership with local and national organizations. This includes environmental stewardship initiatives with the Land Trust Alliance, hiking program with Chester County, and a respite recreation program with the local YMCA. As Margot and her DSPs become accustomed to her schedule of new tasks, their need for support will decrease to free you up to spend 2-3 days per week either on these new programs, on developing other community-based volunteer sites, or helping to train staff working with other families.

We believe that an experienced special education teacher or behavior analyst has most if not all of the skills needed to help monitor Margot’s program, to train and supervise DSPs, and to help to develop new programs, but we are open to other options. We are looking for someone able to start full-time on August 28 or shortly thereafter, and are especially interested in someone able to spend several days with Margot in June, July, and August shadowing her current school staff.

I have run school and hospital programs serving thousands of children with disabilities, and trained and supervised hundreds of staff, so I know what we have to build into our program to support the dedicated professionals working with our children. We include time to plan activities and to meet as a team and with community partners. We maximize the fun for Margot and for you - for example, her schedule includes hiking and biking each week, and skiing in the winter-time. And of course we minimize the paperwork.
