POSITION PURPOSE
The Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine (BBI) at the University of Washington is at the forefront of technology development for understanding human genetic variation and for pathogen genomics. The BBI is searching for an experienced full stack developer to lead software development of a database of genetic variants. The engineer will work closely with researchers, other software developers, and bioinformaticians at the BBI and partner institutions. This position is for a Senior Software Developer (payroll title Software Engineer).

The Brotman Baty Institute (BBI) for Precision Medicine was co-founded by collaborative agreement between the University of Washington, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital. BBI’s mission is to take advantage of Seattle’s unique ecosystem and collaborative culture towards having a transformative impact on biomedical research and patient outcomes with precision medicine. BBI works at the intersection of technology development and medicine in areas including medical genetics, cancer biology, infectious disease and technology development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIIES
  • Software development. The developer will lead work on a database of genetic variants, including APIs, web interfaces, and visualization, and will help to determine development priorities and delegate tasks to other developers to maintain and improve the codebase. This will include but not be limited to development of GUI's, APIs, webpages, dashboards and other tools. (70%)
  • Troubleshooting and analysis. The developer will be responsible for quick bug fixes and software administration to help keep processes moving. (10%)
  • Requirements gathering. The developer will gather requirements from investigators and users. This will include clinical users as well as outside collaborators. (10%)
  • Software documentation. Responsible for writing specifications and code documentation to ensure that others understand what each specific piece of code is doing, and to ensure continuity and maintainability (5%)
  • Software testing. Responsible for testing new software modules prior to release to check for bugs or potentially undesirable side-effects of code interaction (5%)

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, biology, related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Five to six years total software development experience across a range of languages and libraries in a diverse computing environment.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new languages and programming paradigms.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Experience with database technologies such as SQL.
  • Ability to interact with staff, faculty, including clinical users, outside collaborators students at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly agile software development environment with minimal supervision.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with data persistence frameworks like SQLAlchemy or Hibernate
  • Recent experience with any of the following technologies:
  • Python
  • JavaScript
  • Web application frameworks like FastAPI or Flask
  • Vue.js + Vuex (or React + Redux)
  • JavaScript libraries, including Lodash, jQuery, and D3.js
  • SQL
  • Docker
  • AWS or other cloud infrastructures
  • Experience with open-source software development.
  • Experience working in diverse computing environments (LINUX, UNIX, Windows).
  • Experience with software testing methodologies.
  • Experience with software engineering best practices including unit testing, use of project management software and source code repositories, and documentation.
  • Software process experience from requirements gathering through production release.
  • Full-stack programming experience.
  • Working knowledge of biology, genetics, genomics, or DNA sequencing.
  • Familiarity with versioning tools such as Git.
  • Experience in database architecture.
  • Commercial software development experience.
