The City of Fishers is seeking a full-time Senior Planner to join our team. Under general direction of the Director of Planning and Zoning, this role oversees zoning and land use permit applications, conducts development application reviews, manages public comments, and prepares staff reports for zoning changes, code amendments and variances, conducts field inspections, effectively maintains permit documents, and assists in updating the Unified Development Ordinance, Fishers 2040 Comprehensive Plan, and Planning & Zoning department processes.

Examples of Duties

  • Conduct review of various development applications including building permits, plats, zoning permits, sign permits, site plans, variance requests, rezonings, and annexations.
  • Interpret and apply applicable state, county and local codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Streamline the review process and manage development projects by facilitating internal and external meetings that are required as a part of the development review process including but not limited to pre-filing meetings, Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) meetings, neighborhood meetings, and public hearings.
  • Provide excellent customer services to developers and residents as they go through the development review process.
  • Take phone calls, emails, and inquiries from the public and other agencies; provide assistance to walk in customers; work with community members to resolve issues in a time efficient manner.
  • Manage public comments related to development projects.
  • Prepare staff reports and present findings to various boards and committees.
  • Assist in administrating the enforcement of the Unified Development Ordinance and other City Codes and Ordinances.
  • Assist in the maintenance and updating of planning documents, data, and geographic information systems.
  • Assist in the maintenance of website updates and public communications.
  • Perform inspections and related field work.
  • Assist with updates and maintenance of the Fishers 2040 Comprehensive Plan and land development regulations.
  • Assist with long-range planning projects.
  • Attend evening meetings as needed.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Geography, or related field and three (3) years of experience performing planning duties including policy and code review, analysis, and evaluation, and preparation of detailed reports; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience;
  • Well-developed knowledge of planning principles and practices and ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations;
  • Ability to review plans and apply provisions of the ordinances and codes to determine compliance with such regulations and to apply regulations to field conditions;
  • Organizational and time management skills required to oversee various permit reviews and meeting deadlines;
  • Strong customer services skills required;
  • Creative problem-solving skills to gather relevant information to solve practical problems and address citizen inquiries and concerns;
  • Written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills required to present research findings to various boards and committees;
  • Ability to facilitate in-person and virtual public participation activities required;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city departments, associates, planning officials, and the public is essential;
  • Must be able to work in-person, in an open office space environment, and work standard business hours of 8:30am - 4:30pm;
  • Computer software skills including Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS and Adobe InDesign, and Photoshop required;
  • Ability to attend evening meetings a few times per month based on community needs is required.
