Job description
About the Company
We are a stealth renewable energy and ocean technology startup committed to rapidly developing and deploying technologies that will ensure a sustainable future for Earth by unlocking the vast energy potential of its oceans.
The company is a public benefit corporation supported by leading venture capitalists, philanthropic investors, university endowments, and private investment offices. We strive to be the best engineering team on the planet and compensate our team members accordingly.
About the Job
We are developing multiple core technologies that operate in the worst conditions the world's oceans have to offer for years at a time without human maintenance or intervention. The development of our technology stack involves significant rapid prototyping of hardware, small run manufacturing, assembly of electromechanical systems, and rework of custom electrical circuit card assemblies, not to mention meticulous cable organization for our ocean-going systems.
We are seeking a technically-focused, professional technician who can both be a leader in the build-out of our electronics prototyping laboratory and a builder who has the "hands" to manufacture vital parts of the electrical systems of our flagship ocean-going prototype. As our senior electronics technician, you will help set the direction of the laboratory's technical manufacturing and rework capabilities and be on the hiring team to select other technicians as we grow. A year from now, we want our ocean-going electronic systems of such quality that they would make a NASA spacecraft technician proud.
The most relevant and desirable experience for this position would be in the building and maintenance of high-quality scientific, aerospace, or high-reliability industrial electronic devices. Our ideal applicant has sufficient practical experience building high quality systems that he or she can provide actionable feedback to our engineers about how to improve their reliability and ease of assembly.
Because our organizational structure is quite flat, we expect and encourage a high level of personal autonomy and self-direction. You will work collaboratively with our engineers towards deadlines in a creative, scrappy, and collaborative environment in which the best ideas change the company's direction on a regular basis. Our workplace culture is engineering-centric. We value our builders and machinists enormously and give them the resources and freedom they need to do great work.
The job offers significant opportunities for learning and advancement within the company. You will work and exchange ideas with engineers, scientists, and machinists who previously worked at SpaceX, Boeing, Virgin Orbit, Blue Origin, Amazon, Google, Raytheon, Microsoft, and other leading technology companies, as well as leading research universities and multiple branches of the United States armed forces.
Responsibilities
- Fabricating, reworking, testing, calibrating, and troubleshooting analog and digital electronics
- Assembling depth-rated enclosures, bulkhead panel wiring, and cable harnesses
- Assembling microcontrollers, sensors, and power systems into integrated power and data networks for our ocean-going systems and test platforms
- High-skill soldering, component replacement, board-bring up, and (low-quantity) board rework
- Testing and QA of externally-built PCBs and sensor systems as they enter inventory
- Support of electrical and software engineering teams with initial flashing and provisioning of microcontroller and IoT systems
- Leading electrical engineering prototype shop build-out, including ongoing selection and purchase of laboratory test equipment, soldering stations, board assembly machines, rework tools, and general supplies
- Supporting and helping enforce our safety culture
- Inventory management and creating/maintaining organizational systems for electronic components, including labeling and developing storage solutions for components
- Keeping shop space and electronics stations under your direction orderly, clean, and well-stocked
- Helping prepare and kit hardware for off-site operations in remote locations
- Use of computer software such as relational databases, word processors, and spreadsheets to create, document, and maintain the organizational systems
Requirements
You will be required to be on your feet for up to 8 hours per day and occasionally lift objects weighing 50 pounds or more. You should be comfortable occasionally working in elevated work areas, including on ladders and platforms, with appropriate safety equipment. Forklift training will be offered.
You will occasionally be asked to help other teams within the company, such as facilities, office management, and logistics.
Qualifications
You will be a strong candidate if you:
- Have significant (3+ years) hands-on experience building, modifying, testing, and troubleshooting printed circuit board assemblies, with both through-hole and surface mount components
- Have experience with high voltage electronics and safety implications
- Have experience fabricating cable assemblies
- Have experience with thermal paste application
- Have the ability to fluently read schematics
- Have strong knowledge of tools and equipment used in electronics fabrication and testing (soldering iron, reflow oven, hot air rework station, optical microscope, common hand tools, digital multimeter, oscilloscopes, adjustable power supplies)
- Have knowledge of electrostatic discharge (ESD) best practices
- Have significant experience using computer software such as relational databases, word processors, and spreadsheets
- Have workplace organizational skills
- Have a strong work ethic
- Have a strong attention to detail
- Have a desire to drive continuous improvement
- Have the ability to be self-directed
- Work and communicate well with others
- Are comfortable following instructions as well as pushing back on inadequate instructions
