Position Overview
This position of Scientist in Global Capabilities MS&T Materials Science will support technical work for raw materials such as compendial, non-compendial raw materials, excipients, and cleaning agents used within commercial drug substance and drug product manufacturing of Bristol Myers Squibb biopharmaceuticals. The scope of work will include leading technical assessments based on analytical laboratory studies, authoring technical reports and risk assessments, leading and/or supporting investigations, new and alternative materials evaluations, raw material monitoring, and technical transfers. The position will involve approximately 50% laboratory work applying common analytical tools such as spectroscopy, particle sizing, x-ray fluorescence (XRF), and mass spectroscopy to understand raw material characteristics as well as enhancing raw material capabilities by leading analytical study design on novel methods or techniques.
The candidate will work in close collaboration with process development, manufacturing technology, MS&T Process, manufacturing operations, supply chain, quality groups, technical product teams, third party laboratories, and procurement functions to enhance the global materials control strategy. Moreover, as a network position, this role will support internal and external drug substance and drug product manufacturing partners throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The position will report to a Principal Scientist of Materials Science, Global Capabilities & Technical Strategy, MS&T based in BMS Devens, Massachusetts United States.
Position Responsibilities
Serves as a subject matter expert (SME) for raw materials, including compendial and non-compendial raw materials, and excipients used in drug substance and drug product BMS biologics manufacturing.
Supports investigations, raw material monitoring, and new/alternative material qualifications through analytical-chemistry laboratory support such as spectroscopy, particle sizing, metals, amino acid analysis and vitamin analysis.
Leads analytical study design, execution, data analysis, and interpretation of material related testing within a materials science lab.
Coordinates and oversees analytical testing performed at contract testing laboratories.
Supports raw material end-to-end lifecycle management through authoring/reviewing technical assessments and change controls for new/alternative material suppliers.
Authors risk assessment by using scientific risk-based approaches to support raw material network strategies.
Establishes material specifications through matrix leadership with business partners.
Assists and/or leads material investigations, including root cause analysis, CAPA generation, and impact assessments.
Authors and reviews regulatory documentation as a raw materials SME, as appropriate.
Authors protocols, reports, and technical presentations.
Participates in cross functional teams (i.e., Supply Chain, Quality Compliance and Assurance, Manufacturing, Procurement) for material characterization and new/alternate material selection.
Collaborates with internal and external partners to achieve shared goals and ensure application of best practices.
Business Partners and Interactions
The Scientist for Global Capabilities MS&T Materials Science position will report into a Principal Scientist for MS&T Material Science group.
Close collaborations will also be needed with Process Development, MS&T, Manufacturing Technology, Manufacturing operations, Supply Chain, Quality Assurance/Quality Control, Technical Product Teams, Third Party Laboratories, and Procurement functions.
Occasional interactions occur with external industry such as BioPhorum and regulatory representatives.
May interact directly with Health Authorities during inspections.
Education
Relevant scientific or engineering discipline (ie: analytical chemistry, chemical engineering, material science, forensic sciences)
Bachelor’s degree with minimum 6 years of relevant experience
Master's or PhD is preferred but not required. Time spent in advanced degree programs may be considered as equivalent relevant experience.
Experience
In depth understanding of materials used within biopharmaceutical process, including but not limited to cell culture media, chemicals, excipients,
Knowledge of common material analytical tools such as NIR, FTIR, Raman, XRF, SEM, particle sizing, NMR, LCMS, GCMS, and demonstrated experimental skills for lab work.
Candidates must possess excellent organizational skills and strong attention to details, proficient experimental/troubleshooting aptitude, be self-motivated and demonstrate a high degree of initiative.
Experience with cGMP regulations, regulatory requirements, and CMC authoring for biologics processes are a plus.
The candidate should also possess strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work seamlessly in a multifunctional team environment.
