Duties

  • Serves as a Regional technical expert in interpreting the Agency's legal responsibilities under the Endangered Species Act and responsibilities under Agency Threatened, Endangered and Sensitive Species( TES) policies.
  • Maintains knowledge of legal requirements of Endangered Species Act (ESA) and works with field offices to insure compliance with legal requirements of ESA and Agency management decisions.
  • Prepares and reviews ESA section 7(a)(2) biological assessments. Assists Agencies in preparing ESA section 7(a)(2) biological assessments.
  • Assists in providing Regional coordination for TES habitat planning in Agency Resource Management Plans.
  • Serves as a contact with the Washington Office (WO) on program planning and budget interpretation involving the TES program.
  • Assists the Regional TES Program Leader in keeping RO staff, other RO staff units and Forests informed of major TES species issues, legislation; classification, and emerging Agency direction.

Basic Requirement: GS-0401:

Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major field of study that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Related course work generally refers to courses that may be accepted as part of the program major.

OR
Combination of education and experience that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, AND experience sufficient to demonstrate that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation that is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field needed to perform the work of the occupation.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-12: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as performing three or more of the following:
  • Assist in long-range planning or development of a natural resource program's goals, objections and standards and/or implementation of activities on federal land;
  • Led the design of wildlife/fish/plant habitat studies and strategies to collect new data required to ensure habitat and population monitoring, maintenance, and management;
  • Analyze and interpret project study data and results and provide recommendations relating to wildlife, fisheries, and/or botany resource/habitat requirements;
  • Prepare specialist reports for environmental analysis documents (including Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements) and develop Endangered Species Act (ESA) Section 7 consultation documents on a routine basis; and/or
  • Provide oversight/review of these types of documents for other entry level employees.
Work Experience: Your resume must clearly document the following for each block of work experience; the beginning day, month and year the work assignment started and ended; the hours worked per week; position title, and series and grade if applicable; and description of duties performed.
