Reporting to the Access Services Lead, Biomedical Library, the Sciences Evening and Weekend Assistant (SEWA) performs all Biomedical Library functions and supervises student staff. Major duties include circulation desk activities, supervision and training of 10 FTE student employees (about 20 employees); public service; handling billing questions; stacks and item record maintenance; library card issuance; responding to user complaints and safety and security issues; maintains CLICC laptop service; and basic technical processing. Responsible for ensuring all access and public service functions are efficiently performed and coordinated nights and weekends, in the absence of other Access Services staff. Works collaboratively with the Access Services Lead, Biomedical Library in day-to-day planning and decision-making for the department. Assists in the library's efforts to connect with patrons through various official UCLA Library web and social media outlets in order to promote and provide library services, foster a sense of community, and to resolve problems. This position works primarily in the Biomedical Library and also performs duties at the Science and Engineering Library/Boelter as required. Works closely and collaboratively with other Unified Access Services evening and weekend staff to ensure safe and secure operations, and to provide emergency backup coverage, for all libraries reporting to the University Librarian. Modifies work schedule when a need for coverage arises.The Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library and the Science and Engineering Library (SEL) serve the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and the Applied Sciences, the Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health, the Schools of Dentistry and Nursing, the UCLA Health System, both the Life Sciences Division and the Physical Sciences Division of the College of Letters and Science, related research institutes, and all others in the UCLA community who need science information. The libraries are situated in three locations: the Biomedical Library is located in the Center for Health Sciences and the SEL is located both in Boelter Hall and in the Geology Building. The Biomedical Library includes 4.0 FTE librarians (excluding the Director), 13 FTE staff, and 12.0 FTE students which consist of 50 individuals. The SEL staff includes 3.0 FTE librarians, 3.0 FTE staff, and 8.5 FTE students which consist of 36 individuals.
The Enterprise-Wide Operations section of Access Services is responsible for coordinating and executing annual deposits of materials from the libraries to the Southern Regional Library facility, planning and executing large-scale shifting operations, pulling and replacing materials for various digitization projects, opening and receiving shelf-ready materials at various libraries, and coordinating course reserves policies at the UCLA Libraries.
