Responsibilities:
The Safety Specialist will ensure the safety and compliance of the University of South Alabama hospitals with respect to the Life Safety Code and accreditation requirements for the Environment of Care (EOC) and Life Safety standards/regulations; assists with regulatory activities of Life Safety and identifying processes and monitoring of ongoing conditions to assure a safe environment of care for patients, visitors and employees; assists in the development and implementation of performance improvement programs regarding the Life Safety and the Environment of Care and activities in patient care areas; helps maintain records of all PI activities affecting Life safety and the EOC; assists with reviewing and monitoring record keeping, existing conditions, and code concerns; actively participates in all surveys; works in collaboration with Assistant Director of Safety and coordinates the follow-up of The Joint commission (accreditation) and Department of Health recommendations and requirements; educates employees on changes to the regulatory standards; assists with Environment of Care rounds for hospital Joint Commission-accredited areas; assists with conducting physical inspection (rounding) of USA Health facilities; performs monthly inspections on Life Safety equipment, such as fire extinguisher and exit sign inspections; conduct inspections with Life Safety contractors, as needed, on Life Safety equipment; assists in day to day issues, identify, document, and ensure corrective actions; assists with maintaining current and up to date EOC policies including the EOC plans; assists with the organization and maintenance of the The Joint Commission's Environment of Care and Life Safety elements of performance (EP) documentation to assure organizational standards as well as the hospitals institutional standards are in compliance; assists with providing education and training for staff with regards to EOC including but not limited to chemical spills, fire, safe environment, etc.; conducts Fire Drills in the Hospital and coordinates education for staff when needed as a follow-up to the drill; conducts Fire Drills annually in Business Occupancy clinics and coordinates education for staff when needed as a follow-up; conducts Fire Drills quarterly in Ambulatory Occupancy facilities and coordinates education for staff when needed as a follow-up; assists the HS Assistant Director of Safety to maintain all Life Safety requirements; assists with the above ceiling permitting process at both facilities in order to reduce any Life Safety issues; assists with all Pre-Construction Risk Assessments, as needed, including inspections (rounding) of hospital construction projects to assure compliance with hospital safety regulations; abides by all compliance requirements and policies in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values; adheres to policies pertaining to confidentiality; creates and fosters change in positive proactive manner; fosters problem solving using critical thinking skills; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in healthcare related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama. Directly related safety experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required education. Healthcare and compliance experience preferred.
