The Residential Counselor Supervisor assures that this mission is the foundation for the delivery of services and carrying out job duties.
POSITION SUMMARY
The role of the Residential Counselor (RC) Supervisor is to supervise and coordinate the work of the RCs that support patients in residential treatment. Additionally, this position is responsible for assuring that the overall atmosphere of the residential setting for patients is hospitable, safe, and equipped for the patients’ basic needs. They personally establish and help staff to have a helping relationship with the patients, which is characterized by warmth, respect, genuineness, concreteness, and empathy, providing leadership to ensure the development and maintenance of RC competencies.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Leadership Responsibilities
- Serves as a member of the Residential Leadership Team and Fora’s Leadership Team.
- Establishes protocols, policies and practices that increase the therapeutic excellence of the program and hold staff accountable.
- Serves as a role model for staff and patients by demonstrating ethical behaviors, effective communication and suitable problem-solving skills.
- Supervises the work of the RCs to ensure performance to job description. Conduct employment interviews with applicants, complete paperwork and recommend for hire.
Complete reference checks.
- Orients, supervises, and evaluate RCs and Lead RCs.
- Provides regular, formal management supervision in one-on-one fashion with every RC.
Complete annual performance evaluations for RCs. Follow through with necessary progressive discipline in collaboration with the Human Resources team.
- Schedules RCs and on-call RCs to ensure coverage of all shifts and provide on-call support as assigned.
- Provides and/or secures competency training(s) for improving the skills and clinical acumen of RCs, guiding RC growth, performance and advancement opportunities.
- Plays an instrumental role in developing and maintaining RC competencies and assuring that training for those competencies occurs.
- Stays current with agency changes in programs, policies, or procedures, and communicates this information to all RC staff, as well assure staff are integrating this information into daily practice.
- Oversees RC’s in performing UDS and random breathalyzers testing.
- Assures that RC area practice is aligned with policy and procedures pertaining to RC and milieu management responsibilities.
- Provides on-call support as assigned to ensure required coverage of all shifts and share manager on call responsibilities with other members of the residential leadership team.
Professional and Ethical Responsibilities
- Ensures appropriate and therapeutic interactions occur among the RC staff and other members of the Fora Team.
- In coordination with Fora’s Quality Management team, adheres to Federal and State laws and agency policies and procedures regarding the treatment of substance use disorders.
- Recognizes the importance of individual differences that influence patient behavior and apply this understanding to clinical practice.
- Actively participates in ongoing supervision and consultation, bringing any ethical questions that have come up into this setting.
- Develops and utilizes strategies to maintain one's own physical and mental health.
- Maintains any licensure held at time of hire.
- Program Clinical Team Responsibilities
- Attends and participates in all treatment team and clinical supervision meetings as assigned.
- Actively builds, strengthens, and maintains effective working relationships with clinical team members and management.

- Responds to verbal and written communication in a timely and complete manner indicating plans, target dates and feedback mechanisms.
- Communicates and collaborates effectively with staff from other departments.
- Maintains cleanliness and safety of work environment.
- Attends Health & Safety meetings, Quality Improvement, and Leadership meetings, as assigned.
- Attends All Staff meetings and other meetings as assigned.
- Completes and follows up on all Incident Reports.
- Maintains flexibility in scheduling to meet changing needs of program, setting, and team environments. Periodic adjustment of work schedule and overtime may be required.
- Participates in development of and working toward department quarterly and annual goals.
- Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS
- This position directly supervises the RCs.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of 1 year and preferable 2-3 years of supervisory experience in related field.
Bachelor’s degree, CADC, CN/MA preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

- Understanding of mental health disorders and symptom presentation
- Understanding of trauma informed care
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Verification of Sobriety, per Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR) standards
- DHS Background Check Approval

- Successful completion of Drug Test upon hire
- Documentation of Tuberculian test and/or evaluation with negative results or evidence of non-communicability
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position generally works in an indoor office environment with infrequent travel between sites, off site or to special events.
- Position requires on-call availability to respond to emergency situations during off-duty hours.
- Position requires some overtime, including evening and weekends hours.
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases which can encompass a variety of illnesses and infections, including tuberculosis, Hepatitis A, B, and C, and HIV.
- Possible exposure to upset, angry, severely traumatized, or emotionally dysregulated adults, adolescents, and families.
- Exposure to potentially hazardous cleaning chemicals, personal protective equipment provided.
