Residential Counselor provides direct support, training and instruction to residents. They participate in implementing ISP (e.g. Individualized Service Plan) for residents by providing care, supervision and instruction of all residents in all on and off site activities according to individual needs, choices, and Individual Program Plan (IPP).

Residential Counselor reports to the Administrator and in their absence the Facility House Manager

Essential Job Duties:

  • Housekeeping: vacuuming and mopping of floors, dusting and cleaning fixtures and walls, washing dishes and doing laundry; maintaining clean and sanitary bathrooms and kitchen facilities; making beds, organizing closets and drawers maintain the overall cleanliness and appearance of the home
  • Assist residents with hygiene care including brushing teeth, toileting, diaper changes, bathing, etc.
  • Meal Preparation: according to posted menu, following sanitation and health guidelines
  • Record Keeping: maintain personal time cards, resident documentation including daily and monthly consumer reports, communication logs, unusual/special incident reports, medication charts and mandatory resident abuse reports
  • Activities: required to accompany, assist, instruct, support and participate in scheduled activities in accordance with the resident’s ISP/IPP and identified specific needs (including school work)
  • Assist residents in learning emergency procedures with regard to earthquakes, fires, and behavioral emergencies
  • Fills in for the Facility House Manager when he/she is unavailable; In the Facility House Manager’s absence will ensure residents receive 24 hour a day care, education, training and supervision (including but not limited to overseeing medication administration, health maintenance, activities of daily life curriculum, menu planning, scheduling, etc.)
  • Will be on-call to respond to emergencies.
  • Participates in resident case conferences; responsible for discussing data related to resident's progress and objectives from collected data
  • Report and document suspected dependent abuse and complete Unusual or Special Incident Reports and Abuse Reports as required by regulatory agencies
  • Responsible for responding to crisis and or emergency situations while on duty
  • Coordinate effectively in the interest of the residents with other organizations such as Regional Center of the East Bay, the Department of Social Services, School Personnel and Alameda County Mental Health
  • Work with and have knowledge of all Community Care Licensing Title 22 and Regional Center Title 17 requirements and regulations
  • Recognize the early signs of illness and need for professional assistance
  • Supervise the self-administration of prescription medications to ensure residents are taking, the proper medication, at the proper dosage, at the proper time and documenting it on the proper form
  • Will participate and document a minimum of 10 hours of continuing education during the first year of hire and 10 hours thereafter

Direct Support Staff Position Specifications:

  • A. Degree from an accredited school, or two years of experience in providing direct support services to services to developmentally disabled adults with behavioral challenges
  • The ability to work as a team member and to represent SJBH in a professional manner
  • Documented experience in behavior management techniques (either experience or certification)
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Provide three references from persons knowledgeable about his/her work with the population
  • Clean DMV printout, valid California Driver’s license, current auto insurance and registration

Must have TB, health clearances, fingerprint clearances (including criminal record clearance), first aid, CPR prior to hire and must be able to render emergency services when necessary. Must sucessfully complete Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training before being left alone to supervise residents. Must have DSP Year 1 & 2 and 12 hours of CEU’s each year.

  • Regularly talk or hear up to 8 hours a day

  • Regularly sit and stand from chair up to 20 times a day
  • Stand for long periods of time while working with residents
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Occasionally stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms
  • Push/pull mobility devises, assist client in ambulation, transferring, repositioning, etc., whenever the situation arises
  • Manipulate medical/adaptive equipment and devices when the situation arises
  • Kneel, crouch, squat, crawl, and twist upper body, grasp, and run, in order to perform essential duties of this position
  • Possess the ability to provide intervention during crisis situations
  • Occasionally climb stairs and/or take elevator
  • Occasionally get in and out of car up to 6 times a day
  • Occasionally drive in dry and wet weather, usually during day light hours, but occasionally in the evening hours
  • Lift and/or move up to seventy five (75) pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

  • Work indoors/outdoors in all types of weather conditions, dependent on consumer’s needs
  • Work under conditions of chemical/toxic hazards, while working with cleaning supplies
  • Work with household electrical items, such as vacuum, toaster oven, microwave etc.
  • Work under conditions of body fluids and body odors, while assisting consumer
  • Work under conditions of possible assaultive behaviors of consumers

Salary: $27,000 to $37,000.00 /year
