Project Overview

Bechtel National, Inc. (BNI), Bechtel’s government services business, is one of the top providers to departments and agencies of the U.S. government. Its successes include many large, first-of-a-kind projects in government site management, environmental restoration, defense, space, energy, and national and homeland security. Bechtel currently manages the Mobile Launcher 2 (ML2) project at Kennedy Space Center, FL. This project is the design and construction of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) ML2 for the Space Launch System (SLS).


Position Summary

In this position, the Project Engineer will be responsible for coordination and planning of Engineering activities with a focus on the Mechanical project scope, associated with final design package issuance, project procurements and construction support. Requires knowledge of interdisciplinary interfaces for design deliverables, engineering estimating for trends and forecasting, schedule development, coordination with other departments including procurement, construction, and start-up, and tracking of open items and punchlist items to closure. Must assure deliverables to construction are complete and submitted to support field activities. Work with other project engineers, engineering management, and project management for prioritization of work. Champion the development of necessary procedures and desktop instructions to aid in the execution of work. Champion the preparation of trends as required. Provide working knowledge and guidance to engineering staff for finalization of design to assure construction fabrication and ultimate turnover to start-up. Work with customer/client technical and management interfaces to develop innovative solutions to technical challenges.


Principle responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Directs and coordinates engineering activities for the project or assigned portion including oversight of engineers of all disciplines.
  • Coordinates engineering effort with Engineering Manager, Procurement, Construction, Startup, Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H) and Project Controls as required.
  • Reviews and approves design documents, change orders, material requisitions and specifications for construction or procurement use.
  • Coordinates activities among the design groups on the project to resolve field/procurement initiated questions.
  • Reviews project engineering progress against approved schedules, evaluates changes and takes corrective action when required.
  • Ensures that Technical Risk Assessments are comprehensive and complete, safety practices and procedures are implemented, and engineering design and corresponding design documentation are in compliance with project Quality Assurance plan and procedures.
  • Lead investigations including assessment of risk, recommendations, and follow-through of actions.
  • Build an inclusive team environment where all are able and expected to contribute to the maximum of their capabilities. Provide leadership and mentoring to team members. Create meaningful goals working with the team and ensure goals are met.
  • Establish and maintain work plans to ensure schedules are met and stakeholder requirements are satisfied. Create and track actions, estimate hours and update schedules.
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to client, project and functional management as directed and as appropriate.


Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • Level I - Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Equivalent) from an accredited university or college with 9 years of progressive, relevant engineering experience.
  • Level II - Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Equivalent) from an accredited university or college with 13 years of progressive, relevant engineering experience.
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident of the US.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Professional Engineering Registration recognized by NCEES (Mechanical or equivalent).
  • Technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering and construction methods and materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating design and engineering processes with construction, procurement, start-up, etc. interfaces is required.
  • Proficient knowledge of planning, application and coordination of 2-D and/or 3-D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) design processes on a project.
  • Proficient in the methods of design configuration control and Systems Engineering.
  • Scheduling and estimating skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior project engineering or supervisory experience on DOE/DOD/Government Projects.
  • EVMS training with variance report preparation experience.
  • Experience managing subcontractors.
  • Previous Aerospace/NASA project experience.
  • Facility/system operational experience.
