Job description

We are seeking an experienced Process Engineer to join our energetic, multidisciplinary team as we work to scale up a first-of-its-kind biomanufacturing technology. This position will report to the Commercial Plant Project Manager and will collaborate with the internal project team as well as provide oversight for our pilot plant engineering projects. This is a full-time, hybrid position with both in person work at our pilot plant site in Redwood City, our potential future commercial plant site in Vacaville as well as some work from home.

Our team of passionate scientists, engineers, operators, and business leaders are working to transform the future of our planet and we’re looking for talented team members. Mango Materials is a certified B Corp and women-led team that is producing and selling biobased, biodegradable materials from waste greenhouse gases.

In addition to working with novel technology to help combat climate change and create revolutionary, Earth-friendly materials, Mango team members also enjoy working in a collaborative and inclusive company culture. We are committed to not only hiring diverse talent, but also to ensuring all team members feel a sense of belonging within our organization and that everyone is developing and learning daily.

Background on the company and position:

The company is led by a technically oriented team - five of our senior team members have PhDs in STEM. We put the safety and well-being of our people above all other priorities. We love to track and measure. We use a software called Asana to monitor project progress, allocate tasks and communicate across different shifts and locations. We follow detailed standard operating procedures for all research testing, plant operations, and business operations. We keep detailed timecards. We have meticulous naming and version control policies for all electronic files. We record and thoroughly analyze all data and are in constant pursuit to find the best and most efficient way to get things done. We work hard and always seek to work smart.

Our pilot operation is hosted by our partner, a local wastewater treatment plant, and we have office trailers near our production site. Odors and noises affiliated with a modern waste processing facility are to be expected.

Mango is in growth mode. Scale-up of this type is a process with many unknowns and surprises, and this position will have the opportunity to help scale a novel technology. We are looking for someone to join us on this adventure with an open mind and enthusiasm to get into the details. A glass half-full, positive attitude is a must!

The mission of this position is to develop internal process design recommendations for a first-of-a-kind commercial scale plant, complete pilot-scale engineering projects to improve our production facility and serve as a subject matter expert in design review of engineering documentation.

The Process Engineer will be expected to:

  • Lead internal efforts on technical process design
  • Create technical documentation for our first-of-a-kind commercial biomanufacturing facility
  • Work closely with the internal project team and external consultants to support the Commercial Plant Project by answering inquiries, reviewing drawings/documentation, and participating in design/safety reviews
  • Advise pilot-scale engineering projects

Our ideal candidate is/has:

  • Undergraduate degree in chemical or biological engineering.
  • 5-10 years of engineering experience, in an industrial environment.
  • Site/field experience.
  • Experience creating and checking engineering documents and drawings for new or modified processes.
  • Experience researching and solving engineering challenges, formulating reports, design memorandums, decision records, and making recommendations (preferably with some of these experiences in new technology implementation and/or scale-up).
  • Work with team members and SMEs to collaborate on successful engineering and design studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and redline drawings in a timely fashion and be flexible to accommodate project-specific needs.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, leadership, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including excellent technical writing skills.
  • Highly attentive to detail.
  • An overall positive outlook.
  • An outside of the box thinker with a growth mindset.
  • Comfortable with a fast-paced work environment and the uncertainty inherent in a start-up company.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Specific industry experience: bio-processing/manufacturing, food and beverage, manufacturing, specialty chemicals, and/or oil & gas.
  • Training and experience with process simulation software (i.e. HYSIS, Intelligen, SuperPRO, Aspen etc.).
  • Experience conducting complex chemical engineering calculations
  • Ability and interest in coaching/mentoring.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, policies, standards, and best practices relevant to the industry.
