Description of Job

JOB DUTIES: Your application must provide a detailed description of your relevant work experience in relation to the following duties: This full-time position provides policing for the Campus Police Department at Pikes Peak Community College. Position is responsible for providing a safe working and learning environment by protecting life and property, detecting of crime, preventing of criminal activity, investigating, community services, and enforcing of all laws, rules and regulations.

Criminal Law Enforcement duties include:
  • Responds to all calls for service, both criminal and non-criminal.
  • Conducts field interviews of suspicious people and their conduct.
  • Investigates alleged criminal actions, collects evidence as needed, interviews victims, witnesses and suspects.
  • Arrests and/or detains person(s) as appropriate and provides proper advisements to those under arrest as needed.
  • Conducts appropriate traffic enforcement for motor vehicle violations. Investigates and records motor vehicle accidents and renders aid.
  • Patrols/monitors campus to deter, prevents and/or discovers criminal activity and/or people in need of Law Enforcement services.
  • Responds to both criminal and non-criminal emergencies.
  • Works in collaboration and constructive cooperation with fellow officers, Departmental Leadership, and other departments.
  • Provides effective community relations with the public through verbal and written communication.
  • Arrives for shifts as scheduled and remains present through scheduled shift.
  • Wears a body camera on front of uniform shirt, and powered on for the duration of assigned shift.
Record keeping and evidence handling duties include:
  • Prepares reports, both written and verbal, regarding all activities performed during a shift.
  • Prepares and complete necessary reports regarding criminal activity for presentation to District Attorney for prosecuting.
  • Prepares and completes necessary reports for Campus Administrative action or actions, to include dissemination to PPCC.
  • Prepares and preserves all necessary and required evidence, and logs and stores the evidence properly.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Appears when requested and required in the appropriate court.
  • Provides testimony relative to the investigation of crimes and the charging of individuals with criminal and non-criminal offenses.
Additional duties include:
  • Maintains crowd, traffic control and specialized enforcement at public events.
  • Coordinates efforts with appropriate Law Enforcement regarding dignitary protection and security.
  • Provides Law Enforcement escort as appropriate for campus monetary operations. Locks/unlocks PPCC facilities as needed.
  • Participates in in-service and specialized Law Enforcement training and continuing education.
  • Maintains proficiency in firearms, arrest control, defensive tactics, and any P.O.S.T. required training.
  • Maintains an ongoing familiarity with current Law Enforcement legal issues and recent local, state, and federal court decisions that affect Law Enforcement.
  • Performs appropriate vehicle maintenance.
  • Performs community escorts as assigned and responds to and addresses animal complaints and issues.
  • Provides community relations with the public through verbal and written communications and exchanges.
  • Provides crime prevention and safety lectures and demonstrations.
  • Instructs Law Enforcement Classes for the Department and other agencies to maintain proficiency in the certified instructional areas.
  • Complies with all P.O.S.T. mandates to instruct classes.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of current Colorado P.O.S.T certification AND one year of patrol experience as a Police Officer or Sheriff’s Deputy enforcing state laws and traffic violations patrolling by foot and vehicle. Please submit your P.O.S.T. Identification number with the application. Part-time work is pro-rated.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Must be at least 21 years of age; possess a valid Colorado Driver License and no:

  • Felony convictions
  • Domestic violence convictions
  • Acquired more than six points in the last year and/or more than 10 points within the last 24 months on a driver’s license.
  • Alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten years.
Positions require a personal and employment background investigation which will include a polygraph interview, fingerprint check and drug screen.

SUBSTITUTION:
An Associate’s degree or higher in Criminal Justice may substitute for the general law enforcement experience. However, there is no substitution for the specific experience listed above, nor the POST Certification.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Please provide a detailed description on your application of your relevant work experience and document examples of your work in relation to the following: Strong oral and written communication skills. Variety of policing experience. Experience and ability to work with diverse groups of people. Understand and determine appropriate rules and regulations from various sources. Attention to detail. Knowledgeable in the use of a personal computer and application programs. Previous investigative experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The Background investigation is part of the exam process. You must pass the initial review to continue in the examination and interviewing process. You must meet the minimum Employment Standards. The following are minimum standards of ineligibility for employment:

  • Criminal History or conviction of any misdemeanor offenses
  • Drug Usage
  • Theft
  • Employment History – termination or resignation in lieu of termination
  • State Personnel Rules – violation of rules stated in State of Colorado Personnel Rule P4-28
  • Driving Record – excessive points
  • Brady List or Rule 16 letter

After a conditional offer of employment is made, each prospective employee will be required to submit to physical and psychological examinations by a doctor or health care facility which is selected or approved by Pikes Peak Community College Public Safety Department in order to determine whether or not a prospective employee can perform the essential functions of the job.

Felony convictions or conviction of crimes of moral turpitude or convictions of misdemeanors related to job duties may disqualify you from consideration for this position. Should your background check reveal any charges and convictions, it is your responsibility to provide PPCC Office of Human Resources with an official disposition of the charges.

This position requires the individual to exert or lift in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. It also requires seizing, holding, controlling, and/or otherwise subduing violent, assaultive, or physically threatening persons to defend oneself or prevent injury. Body strength and agility of all four limbs is necessary.
