We have an outstanding opportunity for a Pharmacist at our Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario, Oregon! This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates and may be used to fill multiple vacancies.

Purpose of this position
Is to oversee the purchase and dispensing of pharmaceuticals, over the counter medications, medical supplies, and devices to the patients confined to correctional institutions. This position is responsible for opening and closing the pharmacy, controlling pharmacy inventories, providing pharmaceutical advice and information to pharmacy staff, complying with state and federal law, state Board of Pharmacy regulations, and maintaining appropriate Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and log, and providing advice and consultation to physicians and other direct care staff to assist in the treatment of adults-in-custody patients. This includes providing information to adults-in-custody to increase their understanding and compliance to ordered drug regimens.
What you will be doing - duties in detail
  • Correctly interpret physician’s medication orders, both written and verbal, including checking pharmaceutical references, as necessary, to ensure dosage is accurate, medication is appropriate, and hours of administration for taking drug medication is correct.
  • Initiate and maintain patient medication profiles for the population.
  • Dispense medications via a modified Unit Dose System for adults in custody to institution Health Services staff for proper distribution pursuant to a physician's order.
  • Check the work of technician staff before pharmaceuticals are dispensed from the Pharmacy.
  • Accurately document and maintain records of controlled substance usage and remaining balance.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the Pharmacy Inventory System, including disposing of outdated drugs and supplies.
  • Fill requisitions for non-legend floor stock medication to be distributed to medication rooms in the institutions.
  • Perform inspections of institution's medication room to assure proper storage, integrity and security of the medication supply.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A current Pharmacist's license issued by the Oregon State Board of Pharmacy.
NOTE: Some positions may allow for Certifications/Licenses at time of appointment rather than at time of application.
Knowledge of
  • Specialized functions and standards of institutional pharmacy (unit dose drug distribution, IV additives, drug regimen review, drug utilization reviews, drug information, and State and Federal inspections).
  • Science, principles, and practice of pharmacy.
  • Federal and State laws and regulations relating to pharmacy and drugs.
Requested Skills in
  • Performing routine drug regimen reviews, evaluating orders, solving problems, and communicating recommendations.
  • Communicating critical information in an accurate and concise manner to a variety of professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Providing staff with consultations on drug therapy selection, dosing, administration, and monitoring of beneficial and/or adverse effects.
  • Giving clear verbal and written presentations on technical subject matter to physicians, nurses, and other health-care practitioners.
  • Locating and using drug information sources.
  • Reading and interpreting physicians' orders and verifying appropriate use of drugs.
  • Maintaining accurate and complete records in the dispensing and retaining of drugs.

Working Conditions
Working conditions may include contact with adults in custody in the institutional setting, necessity of standing for long periods of time, exposure to pharmaceutical substances that are caustic, volatile, carcinogenic and mutagenic, and on-call responsibility to respond to emergency pharmacy requests during off hours.
Requirements for Employment
You must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following convictions are likely to result in being disqualified for this position: felony convictions, computer theft, identify theft and fraud. CJIS clearance is done at the conditional job offer.

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range. Also provided are fully paid retirement program, modest life insurance policy, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave.
