Position Title: Athletic Trainer

Reports to: Director of Athletic Training Services

Job Status: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Positions Supervised: None

Position Summary: To provide clinical application and administration of comprehensive health care for student-athletes as assigned by the Director of Athletic Training Services. This individual will be an integral part of the sports medicine team who must build professional relationships with student-athletes, athletic and University department staff, parents, and the medical community.

The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) will divide their time between CVFP physician practices and the University of Lynchburg. The position will be split equally with 50% providing the highest level of athletic training services to student-athletes at the University of Lynchburg, and 50% providing direct physician support in the clinic. The Athletic Trainer will work closely with physicians, other clinical providers and office staff to improve productivity, patient outcomes and satisfaction. They will coordinate patient care activities, education, and navigation across the patient-care continuum in the clinic, while expediting the flow of patient care.

Primary Functions & Accountabilities

  • Coordinate and provide high-level medical services to student-athletes of assigned teams at the University of Lynchburg including, but not limited to: prevention, emergency care, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning, and related health care administration tasks.
  • Provide medical coverage and ensure emergency readiness at assigned teams’ practices and events.
  • Provide effective written and oral communication between athletes, coaches, sports performance staff, administrators, as well as the multidisciplinary medical team regarding status and progress of athletes.
  • Maintain confidentiality of medical records.
  • Other athletic training administrative duties as assigned.
  • Initial patient assessment and evaluation, including vitals and detailed patient history.
  • Presentation of findings to physician.
  • Scheduling additional tests, procedures or appointments.
  • Utilization and proficiency of EMR.
  • Postoperative wound and dressing care.
  • Brace fitting, casting and splinting.
  • Home exercise program instruction.
  • Gait and crutch use training.
  • Maintain the highest level of professionalism across all duties and seek to foster professional relationships with student-athletes, athletic and University department staff, parents, and the medical community.
  • Position requires nights and weekends to cover team events.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent customer service skills and patient care focus.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and the overall management of student-athlete health care.
  • Determine and respond to patient needs and concerns based on the diagnosis and treatment plan provided.
  • Provide and explain patient education materials and other documentation in a manner that is understandable to the patient.
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely apply and remove casts and splints for upper and lower extremities.
  • Express understanding of patient education as it relates to post-procedure wound care.
  • Demonstrate appropriate usage of instruments and supplies for wound care and suture/ staple removal.

Position Requirements

  • Current BOC certification as an Athletic Trainer
  • Valid Virginia state licensure, or eligible
  • Physical health sufficient to meet the ergonomic standards and demands of the position
  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred
  • One year experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer preferred
