Essential Functions

  • Conduct financial assessment interviews and screen patients for healthcare benefits/coverage and/or eligibility to participate in available programs.
  • Explain financial requirements and answer all patient questions to ensure full understanding of benefit programs and patient responsibilities. Obtain all necessary forms, documents, and signatures, as required.
  • Assist patients with program enrollment by initiating applications for Medicaid, Medicare, Marketplace plans, Sliding Scale, SNAP benefits, housing assistance, etc. based on financial assessment results and option selection.
  • Record and maintain accurate and complete demographic and financial documentation in the electronic health record, as well as other coverage systems, as required
  • Develop, compile, and/or distribute literature about benefits, eligibility requirements, and availability of health coverage programs and supportive resources.
  • File timely, accurate, and complete application(s) to ensure coverage of all dates of service.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, HMO, and Sliding Fee Scale rules and regulations, including HRSA sliding fee discount requirements.
  • Address and resolve complex enrollment and financial questions and concerns.


Education, Experience and Skills Required

  • Associate’s degree, or a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience required.
  • Certified Application Counselor license required within three (3) months of hire.
  • Senior Health Insurance Plan counselor certification required within three (3) months of hire.
  • Knowledge in public and private health coverage programs and Illinois Insurance Exchange.
  • Experience with Medicare, Medicaid, third-party insurance, copayments, etc.
  • Experience working directly with patients, physicians, physician office staff, healthcare team, etc., both telephonically and in person.
  • Ability to work evenings and some Saturdays.
