POSITION TITLE: Patient Care Technician
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the immediate supervision of the Registered/Licensed Practical Nurse, provides direct patient care. Provides services; patient comfort, safety, and personal care in assigned unit. Including communication between patients, family members and staff. This position encompasses a broad range of technical responsibilities. All duties are carried out in a manner that ensures quality and safe patient care.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provides direct patient care as requested by the primary care nurse, including activities of daily living, e.g., ambulation, dressing, feeding, toiletry needs reporting any changes in patient status.
- Assist with admission of patients in including room setup.
- Assists nursing staff in gathering information pertinent to the patient’s care including the patient’s physical needs and functional status in order to provide patient care.
- Performs nasal, nasopharyngeal and oral swabs.
- Performs duties as delegated by the primary care nurse, charge nurse in accordance with certification and hospital policy, e.g., pulse oximetry, orthostatic vital signs, specimen collection with appropriate labeling, and recording. Demonstrates current knowledge of hospital and department policies and procedures including universal precautions.
- Provides wound cleaning under the direction of the primary care nurse or physician. Applies dressings/dressing changes not requiring sterile technique to wounds under the direction of the primary care nurse or physician
- Assists nurses and doctors with procedures, e.g., proper use of restraints, safely transports patients’ supplies and specimens throughout the hospital.
- Prepares patients for discharge by primary care nurse to include removal of electrodes and belonging list.
- Provides patients with appropriate means of transportation out of the hospital.
- Stocks and cleans the unit under the direction of the charge nurse
- Remains proficient in communication and interpersonal relationships with patients, families/significant others and other members of the healthcare team; while demonstrating awareness of cultural and spiritual practices of the customer/s
- Assists with answering the patient call bell and unit telephone in a professional manner.
- Consistently maintains a professional appearance and dress. Wear name badge in accordance with hospital policy at all times.
MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED: High School Diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in nursing program.
PREFERRED:
One year acute care experience or pre-hospital experience as an EMT or Paramedic; or currently in an approved nursing program. Ability to speak English and have legible handwriting, knowledge of basic arithmetic, skill in dealing with the public and associated telephone courtesy, skilled in proper use of body mechanics.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to withstand constant walking, standing, lifting at least 50 lbs. or more, push/pull regulation hospital equipment, occasional sitting. Must be able to function during periods of stress, and exposure to trauma and/or disease and have the requisite visual, auditory and fine motor skills.
PAY RATE: $17.35 - $25.59
