General Summary:

The Parks & Recreation Special Events Director performs professional duties in planning, developing, coordinating, implementing, and supervising special events, senior center events/programs, and facility rentals.

Essential Job Functions: *

  • Coordinates, schedules programs, events, and facilities, contracting for artists and tenants, promotion, marketing, and audience development.
  • Coordinates and implements community-wide special events including events in the Hanahan Amphitheater area and other event planning needs. Events include, but not limited to Hanahan Red, White, Blue Festival, Trunk or Treat, Christmas Tree Lighting, Farmers Market, Concert and Music Series, Fall Market, and Movies in the Park.
  • Monitors program and event operation: reports attendance, maintenance needs, revenues and expenditures and programmatic updates to the Recreation and Parks Director.
  • Coordinates activities for events.
  • Supervises, trains and guides part time staff and volunteers.
  • Performs administrative tasks.
  • Handles telephone inquiries, complaints and offers solutions to situations.
  • Assists with public relation duties such as preparing and distributing flyers, press releases and brochures for special events and senior center programs.
  • Determines special events expectations of the community and develops events accordingly.
  • Creates new and expands current special events and senior center programming.
  • Seeks sponsors to assist with cost or needs of a particular special event.
  • Promotes special events and senior programs through social media.
  • Coordinates, schedule employees, and books facility rentals.
  • Meets with customers to resolve concerns.
  • Recruits and retain senior center program instructors.
  • Recruits and organizes volunteers.
  • Assists with City sponsored events.
  • Cooperates with other city departments, staff, and the public.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Communicates with Recreation Director regularly about senior program and/or special event status.
  • Fulfills individual goals and measurable objectives developed with the Recreation and Parks Director.
  • Fosters a safe environment for both departmental staff and the general public.
  • Follows the direction provided in the Recreation and Parks Mission Statement.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises full-time staff of senior center.
  • Supervises part-time program/event staff and provides direction on a day-to-day basis.
  • Assists in recruitment, training, and supervision of part-time program/event staff.
  • Overall supervision and coordination of staffing and ongoing activities related to the daily operations of services provided.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Program Director.
  • Knowledge of developing and administering recreation and adult government programs.
  • Knowledge of how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals, and members of the public through contact and cooperation.
  • Knowledge of how to personally demonstrate appropriate customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of proper English usage, vocabulary, spelling, and basic mathematics.
  • Knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to multi-task and plan for future needs.
  • Ability to use computer and various software programs, to include Word and Excel.
  • Ability to make sound, educated decisions.
  • Ability to offer instruction and advice to subordinates regarding departmental policies, methods and regulations.
  • Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
  • Ability to read and interpret relatively complex materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
  • Ability to prepare required reports.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the public and all other internal and external customers.

Education, Training and Experience

Bachelors or Associate degree preferred supplemented by three (3) years of experience in public recreation, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license. Must obtain First Aid and CPR Certification within six months of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment

Must have adequate environmental tolerance, including ability to tolerate high temperatures and confining workspaces.

Must have finger and manual dexterity, strength, and physical stamina.

Must have body flexibility including multi-limb coordination.

Must have adequate depth perception, visual acuity, visual stamina, and auditory perception.

Must be able to speak and write adequately.

Ability to understand department rules and regulations, City of Hanahan rules and regulations and standard operating procedures and the ability to help formulate same.

Must be able to concentrate, memorize and reason logically.

Ability to respond to emergencies effectively, to changes effectively, and to directives effectively.
