Purpose Statement
The job of Parents as Teachers Educator is done for the purpose/s of providing parent education and support through personal home visits, group meetings, screening and referrals to resources for parents and students.
Through partnering, facilitating, and reflection, the Parent Educator provides services for parents and/or guardians of children from birth to kindergarten entry and expectant parents. Parent Educators provide parent education and family support to enhance the quality of parenting, increase a parent’s understanding of child development, and work together to make it possible for children to realize their full potential.
Essential Job Functions:
- Provide services to families in an ethical and professional manner, including maintaining appropriate boundaries with families and written, verbal, and electronic confidentiality
- Maintain and submit in a timely manner all required family and program documentation
- Conduct services using the Parents as Teachers Foundational Curriculum to includ the following components: parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well-being
- Plant the visit, gather materials, travel, conduct the visit, and clearly document the visit using required forms.
- Plan and provide group connections (in collaboration with other parent educators and community partners) to give families an opportunity to build social connections with each other, engage in parent-child interaction activities, and increase their knowledge of ways to support children’s development
- Complete child developmental, health, hearing, and vision screenings and share results with families in a sensitive manner
- Connect families and facilitate the use of community resources that support them in reaching their goals and addressing their needs
- Support parents and children to transition to other services as needed, such as early intervention, preschool, or kindergarten
- Develop, monitor and review goals with each family
- Engage in recruitment activities
- Actively participate in scheduled staff meeting
- Be available to communicate with parents between scheduled personal visits when appropriate via text, phone, or email
- Perform other duties as assigned

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include planning and managing activities; preparing and maintaining accurate records, and operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include community resources; early childhood development and parenting skills; life skills; family support principles; and Social Work Best Practices.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes, and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem-solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem-solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines, and problem-solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with culturally diverse populations, including those with limited English proficiency; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; and working flexible hours.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to affect the organization’s services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 40% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with exposure to the risk of injury and/or illness.
Certificates and Licenses:
Successful completion of the Parents As Teachers Foundational and Foundational 2 training is required prior to beginning service delivery.
Qualifications:
- Education: Certification and/or four-year degree in early childhood, elementary education, social work, health, psychology, or a related field or a four-year degree as listed in the Early Childhood Development Act (ECDA).
- Experience: Demonstrated ability in working with young children and their families is required for this position. Length of successful experience varies based upon the degree held/education completed by the applicant.
- Other: the position requires a thorough understanding of child development birth through five years of age. Parent educators must be highly organized, accountable and independent, self-motivated workers. They must be able to establish rapport with families and empower them by building on their strengths. Parent educators must be able to educate and build their knowledge base of community resources to assist in the support of families. Applicants must be competent with computer skills; including e-mail, internet, word-processing and video conferencing. Personal, reliable transportation is necessary to conduct home visits.
Terms of Employment: Part-time flexible position(s) 20+ hours per month during the school year, including up to 1-2 evenings per week
Continuing Education /Training: Complete annual required professional development hours and renew parent educator certification annually
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
