Mandatory Position

This position is designated as ‘mandatory’ and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the building as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.

Primary Purpose of Position
This is a Facility Maintenance Technician (Mechanical Trades) position at the Advanced level. The position is considered to be fully functioning in the trade area. Additionally, this position is expected to be able to perform all general maintenance work at the Advanced level. This position may also be allowed me to serve as lead technician and fill in command when the supervisor is away. Tasks may include maintenance, repair, placement, fabrication, installation, alteration, construction, and design of facility components in the assigned zone.

Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

University Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced: Graduation from high school or equivalent and four years experience. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Essential Job Duties
  • Maintain, repair, replace, fabricate, install, alter, construct, and design facility components that require the application of skills in planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, communication, and adherence to safety.
  • Perform routine maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and/or the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate.
  • Comply with NEC, State, and local building codes when installing electrical systems.
  • Install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including but not limited to lighting and lighting controls, motors and motor controls including VFDs, transfer switch equipment for emergency power, and transformers.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs as necessary.

Other Work Responsibilities
  • Function as a lead worker and be called upon to provide technical assistance and mentor other facility maintenance technicians, therefore must possess strong knowledge of fire, building, electrical, and mechanical codes to maintain compliance with State, Federal, and University regulations and standards.
  • Work with minimal supervision or instruction, and complete work with a high level of competence and professionalism in compliance with generally accepted trade practices.
  • Assist during inclement weather with clearing and cleaning of streets, sidewalks, steps, building entrances, and other areas of obstruction of snow/debris, ice, water, etc. as a Mandatory Employee.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all operations.

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Four years of electrical trade experience is preferred.
  • Any additional trade experience in the field of Plumbing, Building Automation, and/or HVAC.
  • Availability to rotate on-call duties and work after hours when necessary.
  • Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork.
  • Ability to effectively communicate English (reading, writing, interpretation, and comprehension).
  • Effective skills in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication, however, excellent communication skills are preferred.
  • Computer literate. Knowledge and skill with Google Applications.
  • Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds.
  • Selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the position’s essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Positions may be required to possess and maintain required certification, licensure, educational level, and/or experience criteria as applicable to the tasks being performed and follow applicable building codes.

Necessary Licenses or Certifications
Valid driver’s license is required. The FM Tech Mechanical Trades operates assigned vehicles on and/or off-campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver’s license upon appointment to the position
