Position Description: NASA Exploration Systems Avionics Engineer
Job Description:
This position offers an exciting and challenging opportunity to support NASA’s present and future human spaceflight programs. You will assist with the design, development, test and evaluation of spacecraft avionics systems and mission planning for NASA’s lunar exploration programs. You will be responsible for ensuring spacecraft avionics systems comply with all applicable Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) requirements. Avionics may include spacecraft communications and tracking, spacecraft command and data handling, or other electronics systems used by the spacecraft. Specific tasks include:
- Assist with the development and effective implementation of Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) requirements, processes and procedures
- Evaluation of spacecraft avionics design and operations for compliance to NASA S&MA requirements and system certification limits / constraints
- Evaluation of changes to requirements, materials, processes and procedures for avionics systems for potential impacts to flight safety and mission success
- Evaluation of prime contractor processes and products including hazard analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), design verification analysis, reliability and maintainability analysis, limited life item time/cycle tracking reports, hardware qualification and acceptance test reports related to avionics systems
- Perform qualitative and quantitative risk assessments and trade studies related to avionics systems
- Perform integrated hazard analyses of joint operations between exploration projects such as HLS, Gateway, Orion and Extravehicular Activity Systems (EVAS) to identify potential hazards, hazard causes and controls, and document residual flight safety risk related to avionics systems
- Identify, characterize and provide recommendations regarding mitigation of safety and mission assurance risks related to avionics systems to senior management
- Participation in failure analysis and problem resolution related to avionics systems
Qualifications - External
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Two or more years related experience
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills
- High degree of technical excellence, integrity, and self-initiative
- Ability to evaluate technical merits of spacecraft designs and identify alternative solutions to complex technical problems to mitigate mission risk
- Ability to work effectively across multiple organizations / stakeholders and within a teaming environment to get results
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Power Point, Excel)
- Candidates must be US citizens and able to pass a public trust security clearance
DESIRED SKILLS:
- Experience with spacecraft avionics design, test and verification, maintenance, and operations
- Experience with avionics systems related to spacecraft or aircraft flight operations and control, including communications systems
- Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) experience is desirable with emphasis on development and utilization of system safety (hazard analysis) and reliability analyses (FMEA/CIL, PRA, RBDA, FTA) to inform and influence design, test and verification activities, and planned flight operations
- Experience performing root cause analysis and development of fault trees to support anomaly / non-conformance investigations
EDUCATION: BS in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or other STEM degree

TYPICAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors and zero (0) years or more experience
Performs system safety analyses of hardware and software in a variety of systems including weapons defense and combat systems.
Utilizes technical and safety review and documentation analysis techniques to include fault tree analyses, failure modes and hazardous effects analyses, inadvertent launch analyses, and other techniques as required.
Duties include preparing and/or updating safety assessment reports and risk assessment reports.
Reviewing and analyzing system safety management and program plans, safety analyses, accident and incident data, mishap investigation reports, safety test plans and results, and other ESOH related data.
Preparing risk assessment reports, safety assessment reports, and technical data packages and presentation materials for safety review boards. Conducting or review safety assessment of new, updated, and/or modified hardware and software, waivers, and exemption requests.
Performing operational analyses and studies to identify potential deficiencies in weapon operating procedures, ordnance handling procedures, stowage or other logistics phases involving ordnance, safety procedures, etc. and making specific recommendations for their resolution.
May also perform environmental safety assessments on weapons and related systems.
