JOB SUMMARY: Provides direct line supervision to professional/technical staff in one or more specialty section. Performs and analyzes testing on blood, body fluids and tissue in compliance with defined section policies and practices to assure the highest level of patient care. Follows age specific guidelines.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree and two years clinical experience.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent certification required. Specialty certification preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Assures accurate and timely performance of patient procedures and/or issuance of blood products.
• Assures accurate and timely performance of results reporting, QC and QA procedures according to departmental policy.
• Follows proper safety and identification procedures when dealing with patients and/or specimens under any circumstance or environment.
• Performs delegated supervisory responsibilities in the sub-section/shift.
• Collaborates with Manager in preparation of procedure manuals and implementation of new procedures.
• Assists in the training of new personnel and Medical Technology students.
• Improves work skills through self-study and continuing education.
• Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the section and department.
• Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approved policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases.
• Exhibits and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and standards of laboratory testing.
• Provides age appropriate specimen collection in accordance with age specific guidelines for school age, adolescents, early adults, middle adults and/or late adults.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS : Ability to listen and communicate effectively. Technical ability and interest. Ability to work cooperatively, team player Computer and keyboard skills. May require working any shift in a 24-hour period, seven days/week including holidays and possibly taking call.

May be exposed to odorous. chemicals, toxic/flammable/explosive chemicals, and gases Subject to injury from moving parts of equipment. Exposure to hazards for electrical/mechanical/power equipment. Subject to injury from sharps. Subject to many interruptions and stressful situations. May require judgement/action which could result in death of patient. Occasionally subject to irregular hours. Moderate noise environment Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection).
