LABORATORY HOURS: Monday – Friday
SHIFT: Full time, hours vary within the lab’s scheduled operating hours
North Bend Medical Center lab is currently hiring a Medical Lab Scientist for our laboratory. Located in Coos Bay Oregon along the beautiful Southern Oregon coast North Bend Medical Center hosts over 100+ providers in a variety of specialties, along with 400+ employees.

FULL JOB DESCRIPTION
Medical Laboratory Scientist
Our lab conducts a full range of laboratory tests in chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, and urinalysis on clinical specimens to provide information necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
ESSENTIAL RESPONISIBLIES:
  • Perform and report lab tests in accordance with laboratory policies, procedures and quality standards:
    • Process patient specimens according to priority and report results to the LIS.
    • Review patient test data in LIS for accuracy before release to the patient’s record.
    • Alert clinicians or other appropriate designees of abnormal/critical laboratory results in a timely and professional fashion.
  • Monitor test accuracy through performance and evaluation of quality controls:
    • Perform instrument maintenance, calibration, and quality control according to standard operating procedures, if required.
    • Understand and have the ability to pass competencies for all required quality control and proficiency testing materials.
    • Troubleshoot any malfunctioning equipment or test system and repair if possible.
    • Execute corrective actions for instrumentation or testing errors and document if controls are not within specified limits.
  • Audit specimen integrity and identification to ensure that specimens are appropriate for the desired testing.
    • Reject specimens and request redraws as required for inadequate or unacceptable specimens
  • Identify test discrepancies and address any issues that could lead to testing discrepancies.
  • Investigate or initiate sample or result inquiries when requested by providers
  • Refer problems to a specialist, supervisor, manager, or medical director as needed.
  • Answer phone inquiries about department policies, procedures and testing criteria
  • Maintain clean and well-organized work area with adequate supplies and reagents.
  • Track, prepare and alert technical supervisor/manager to low volumes of reagents and supplies when necessary.
  • Maintain technical and professional certifications.
  • Attend all required training, education, and meetings.

EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
  • A copy of academic degrees or official transcripts and current certifications will be required before hire
  • Minimally must meet current qualifications listed under section "Clinical Laboratory Personnel Requirements" defined in the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Act of 1988 (CLIA-88) and Oregon Department of Human Services Regulations, College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Joint Commission standards. CAP reserves the right to set requirements that are more stringent than those of CLIA-88.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technology program or Clinical Laboratory Science
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree and ASCP accreditation as a clinical technologist (H, C, MT, MB, etc.) within the scope of work performed in the laboratory
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree in a biological, chemical or physical science
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Demonstrates the ability to use a computer and various software programs applicable to the position
  • Exhibits the ability to deal effectively interdepartmentally and with other professionals within the laboratory and greater organization
  • Exhibits the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Demonstrates the capacity to think and act independently with minimal supervision
  • Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job location
  • Demonstrates a general knowledge of standard medical laboratory techniques, procedures, and safety precautions
  • Knowledge of CLIA laboratory regulations and the requirements of a position within a CLIA certified laboratory
  • Displays high level organizational skills including ability to multi-task and think critically
EXPERIENCE/PREFFERED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Experience is not required, previous Medical Laboratory Scientist experience preferred.
  • Experience with a Laboratory Information System, experience with EPIC a plus
  • Knowledge of the most common clinical tests for blood and urinalysis.
WORK CONDITIONS:
  • Able to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently
  • May be required to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Must use standard precautions due to the threat of exposure to blood and body fluids
  • Ability to wear the required PPE (masks, gloves, lab coats, etc.)
  • Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on the telephone
  • Requires frequent use of a computer
  • Must demonstrate required manual dexterity
